Hey all,
I'm a college student from the US, there's a possibility I might spend about 5 months in Singapore for an internship in the south west (Buona Vista, Dover Road?). What should I be looking to spend for renting a 1br apartment? Also what is the cost of living like, nice restaurants, transportation, bars? Thanks.

Restaurants? Good ones anywhere from SGD30 to over SGD80. But if you're talking about normal good food it can get pretty cheap here compared to other places.
Transportation is cheap compared to other places too, a typical cab fare, lets say from Buona Vista to town is around SGD8? Thereabouts. Its pretty comfortable.
So, when ya coming over?

Students on an internship ain't going to be eating in S$80 restaurants or zipping around in cabs. Try S$1-2 for a MRT (subway) or bus fare and S$3-5 for a meal in a hawker centre. Cheap 1BR apartments are rather hard to find in Singapore, if you can't pony up around S$800/mo for an HDB (public housing apt) or old
condo you'll want to look into sharing a flat with somebody.

Thanks jp, how are the public housing apts? I guess looking into sharing a flat wouldn't be the worst idea, I'd probably be looking to spend somewhere around S$800-1000, that's like $500-600 US right?

HDBs are basic but functional. Problem is, they tend to be rather big and you don't usually need three bedrooms if you're living alone.
