int. school salary?

Post by illy » Thu, 02 Jun 2005 2:08 pm

I have been invited for an interview at an int. school.
The problem is that i have just started a job in taiwan. so i now have to take time off and buy an air ticket - all for a job i might not get. i can't see this being standard practice - surely they don't expect americans/aussies to just fly in for an interview?
The big problem is that i don't know anything about the remuneration package eg. is it an expat package incl housing and air ticket.

Any ideas what they would pay a teacher with 14 yrs experience at an int. school?

Would it be okay to actually ask about the package first?

thanks

Hi, normally it's a no-no to ask about package too early in the process. It makes the impression that money is all you're interested in.
Having said that, if they are expecting you to fly over for the interview, I think it's perfectly acceptable to ask "what is your policy for reclaiming expenses to travel to the interview?" That way you can also find out about class of travel (business/econ), hotel expenses (room only, which meals) and so on. Good to know that stuff in advance and thereby avoid nasty surprises later.
Good luck

Hi,

you're right: they don't expect others to fly in for the interview. It seems very strange. Having said this, a lot of schools have a base country and so they might be interviewed there. I know that Tanglin sometimes interviews in London, for example. (Obviously they are looking for British teachers).

I noticed in another one of your messages that you weren't sure if they knew you were not in SG anymore. I don't think it's rude at all to call and reiterate this. Make an excuse about flight times/schedules or something (ask if someone can meet you at the airport...) so you know they ARE aware of it and understand that you are coming specially to see them.

I have recently accepted a job at an Intl School. They had no problem sending me the details of the package prior to me attending the interview. They also reimbursed my flight. I think you just have to be upfront
