fresh water/river fish

Post by floydude » Sat, 14 May 2005 9:15 pm

Hi,
could somebody, in particular bengalis/bangladeshis or people who know their ilk point to places where i can buy fresh water fish? The same that we can get anywhere 'inland' in India/Bangladesh?

Incidentally while I was in California it was much easier to get fresh water fish, including restaurants, than in Singapore, which is a hop, skip and jump from India:(

Am i missing out some obvious place?

Try GIANT supermarket. They are usually live ones swimming in the tanks. Not many vareity though. You get a sort of fresh water grouper - "Soon Hock" and Snakeheads - "Toman" in malay. Toman is very popular among Chinese, in particular the Cantonese. They supposedly speed healing after surgery when consumed.

It's not getting any smarter out there. You have to come to terms with stupidity, and make it work for you.

Yep, you are correct, you get 'eelish' at Tekka as well at Mustafa, but thats not meant for everyday cooking. I have my grandmom visiting me and she sure wouldn't bend her rules much wrt fresh water vs sea fish!
Will check out the 'lui' thing at Mustafa!
cheers :-)

For those of you living in the east and find it difficult to do those weekly pilgrimages to Tekka for fresh water fish, heres an alternative. Get off at Aljunaid MRT and walk towards Geylang. There are a number of shops predominantly owned by Bangladeshis that sell all kinds of fresh water fish. Rui ,Ilish, Parshe, Pabda etc to name a few.

Dear #sudiptol,

Thanks for sharing the information about the number of 'Bangladeshi Fish Shop' near Aljunaid MRT and Geylang.
Unfortunately, I was trying to locate the area through Google, but without a success.
Can you please name any specific landmark near the area so that I can trace the area?

Best Regards,
Kumar
