Home Based Business??

Post by Art Lover » Wed, 11 May 2005 12:11 pm

Hi All:

I'm looking for relevant information on starting a small home based business.

I deal in speciality jewelry making supplies and would like to know if:
1. are home based business allowed?
2. I was told that there are "shows" held periodically in Hotel Ballrooms, that have "booths" for rent.
3. My hubby will be an expat, so he will have the relevant visa, do I need a special visa to conduct a business?

PLEASE post replies on this board.
*****I am not interested in a partnership and I don't want to pay for freely available information*****

Thanks in advance for your help/replies.

For a start you might need to have a website

Use web base for your Jewellery eCatalog. Effective to let your customer know you better.

U mentioned your hubby will be an expats.
That means you are a citizen.

Then you will be able to register your business.
Still there are several buisness types, sole proprietor, partnership, pte ltd, etc..

You did not state where do you live or where your home office will be,
for home base you need to apply a permit for URA or HDB.

and to register a business Visit: www.acra.gov.sg/business/registerbiz.html

Jewelry making supplies, you did not state what is actual type of supplies so I can't really advice you.
there are conditions for home base business.
e.g.
1. U cannot keep stock/products at home.
2. u cannot have streams of customers that will inconvenient your neighbourhood.

you can read about it on the above links.

Can I know what kind of supplies you are dealing with?

let me know if the above is helpful or PM me if you need more information.

Cheers.

Hi Artlover,

If you want to start your own business and work from home, I think you need to at least set up your own company as sole proprietor. The reason is you need to have an identity to have a bank a/c for your business. As you know something can't be done in a normal bank a/c such as L/C.
Check this out: www.acra.gov.sg

By the way, the jewellery you are talking about is real or imitation? Where are they from? I am interetsed to sell your product overseas.

Thank you for your response.

My husband will have an employment pass and I will be his dependant.

The supplies that I deal in are varied, but mainly AAA quality semi-precious beads, genuine silver bali beads/pendants....all of which are imported.

I will be living in private housing, i.e a condo.

I do plan on having a web outlet, which I currently run but I WOULD like to do shows.....anyone familiar with the hotel ballroom shows?

I looked up the website links posted, and having read and reread my understanding is that:

1. I need to apply for an employment pass in order to have a business.

2. supplies can be stored in a home if it does not use more that 10 cu ft of space.

I know that there are many expat wives who do some sort of home business...how are they going about it?

Thank you
Art lover
