About cats

Post by lizardzombie » Sun, 06 Jun 2004 1:16 am

Hi

Im new to this forum and new to rearing cats. I would like to keep some cats but im not sure if cats like to be bathed ? Coz I would like to adopt some cats from SPCA and I really want my cats to have a clean bath before letting them roam freely about in my flat.

Anyone who has experience with cats, pls advice me. Thanks :)

theres no problem giving them a bath when you first bring them home

i have a friend who adopted many cats. her usual routine is to give them a one time "first" bath before letting them roam the flat

another friend baths her two cats every other month.

its up to you but beware of scratches. although its alright to bath them (but please not too regularly), they are not going to be willing participants

but there are exceptions i think. some cats actually like water

good luck

Hey, thanks.

I understand most cats don't like water, but the only thing I fear about them is that they scratch. And I would hate to bathe a cat which scratches, but I can't just leave it as is. Btw, can their claws be trimmed at all ?

Claws can be trimmed (don't try yourself - get a vet to do it), but I don't think that this is very kind on the cat. Make sure you get a scratching post for your furry friend to keep its claws trimmed on, or it will scratch carpets, sofas etc.

Try wearing thick rubber gloves or gardening gloves when you bathe the cat if it turns out to be one that scratches, and hold it by the scruff of the neck with one hand, while washing with the other. Better still, rope in a friend to help out! The cat will be very self conscious afterwards and shy away from you, but not for long. My cat did not like water, but didn't scratch on the one occasion I did bathe her. She didn't "talk" to me for an hour afterwards, though.

Cats are the cleanest creatures, so probably you will find you only need to bathe it once when you adopt, and then it will keep itself clean.

Good luck!

Ok folks, this cute kitty beside is my boy..

I think bathing,grooming,trimming of nails & cleaning
of cat's ear wax are all of same important.

Bathing your cat once a month is the most recomanded
coz it'll make the fur of your kitty more fluffy & their
skin beneath more healthy...(whether the cat's afraid of
water depends on the breed & their indvidual personality)

My cat Luv's it so much when i brush his fur...
he'll come pester me to brush his fur atleast once or
twice per day.

When it come's to trimming of their nails...
Come-on! We're not gona declaw our precious kitty &
it's cruel to do it...they'll hate trimming of nails at 1st but will
slowly get to adapt it.
* Trim only the sharp white tips of the nails! Never too
deep,leave the pink areas alone.

You don't need to be a pro to do it...sit cross legged,
let your kitty sleep on its back in the hole in between
your legs so that its four legs are upwards.
wrap your arms around your kitty if he intend to run away..
Just pull his legs, slowly & carefully feel inbetween the fur and
see! you've found his claws!

Cleaning of ear also important, ear mites are common on
cats. You can get ear cleaner from pet shop for $7+
Use a cotton ball or pad to clean with the cleaner,do not
clean too deep into the ears.

Hope my tips works!
