EastCoast Transport

Post by RichardJohnson » Wed, 27 Apr 2005 5:09 pm

Hi there,

We are thinking of renting a condo on the East Coast. I will be working in the CBD and I was wondering how easy it is to commute from the East Coast? I understand that the East Coast is not served well by the MRT.
Can anyone give me an idea of how easy it is to get into the CBD and also roughly how long it will take.
Any suggestions on good condos on the East Coast also gratefully received.
Many thanks

Richard.

This site covers most of what you're looking for, please refer to this page at http://www.singaporeexpats.com/housing- ... ar-MRT.htm

See under TRAIN LINES EW1-EW11, which covers all all train stations in the east coast and they do a recommendation of condos along that line.

Good luck.

Hi I used to live in East side of Singapore for years and now in the UK.

I would recommend Laguna Green (only 3 yrs old)-not many units so is a more private condo with lesser kids and noises, the Bayshore (the new one), Mandarin Garden. Tpt around this area u can get business bus-plus (a green minbus-cost abt S$5) at the normal bus-stop or public bus no 196 (go by nicoll highway). And all these condos are very close to the beach within a few mins walk and easy access to Orchard Rd as well with other bus service no. The closest shopping area will be Parkway Parade with foodcourt there too. If u want to take MRT, depend on which direction u are closer to, u can take from Payar Lebar or Bedok.

Another condo which is close to Tenah Merah MRT is very nice too. I cant recall what the name is but u can see along the tenah merah mrt line. A friend used to live there - big space condo with high ceiling - 2 bedrooms on ground floor and the master bedroom on 1st floor with ensuite.

If u need more advice, i would recommend u go to this site xpatsingapore.com and give a ring to Delphina Yap who herself lived in the East Coast for years too and is a agent now. She can help u find any condo u like with her network.

Sorry forgot to mention it takes abt 30-45mins to CBD if u are working in Shenton way by normal public bus depends on the traffic as usually in the morning is quite packed. But if u use bus-plus, it is faster as it only stop at certain bus stop and once the car is fully seated it will not stop at the next residential bus stop but go straight into town by nicoll highway.

Someone mentioned bus 32, this bus service at East Coast Road itself and it goes by a longer way passing funan Centre, boat quay then chinatown. If on the East Coast Road, it shd be no 10 that will bring u into Shenton Way like the 196.

One last alternative for tpt will be taxi!!! if u are from Europe countries, u will realise taxi is so cheap in Singapore.

But during peak hours in the morning, it is quite difficult to hire a cab on the road so if u dont have the ample time to wait best to call cab. We have comfort, citicab etc. Comfort is cheaper in term of booking fee. 2 faster way to reach CBD area is Nicoll highway and ECP. But going by ECP is more expensive as u will have to pay ECP charge and CBD charge on top of the taxi fare. Whereas, nicoll highway u need to pay just CBD charge plus taxi fare. Both way abt the same time as both will have heavy traffic anyway. Make sure u let the driver know which way u prefer before he proceed otherwise he will go on his own way and never go by beach road which is longer way, the same way as bus 32.

I tried before taking a bus to Bedok MRT or even Cityhall mrt and from there take a train down to raffles place (the closest mrt to CBD) but didnt save me a lot of time.

I think after a while, u will know best way to travel to city. For me, as i used to work in Shenton Way near Lau Pa Sai. So I will travel by 196 and if u plan to go work bet 7-7.30am no problem on traffic is only after 730 traffic started to be heavy. And i will only take bus plus when i was running late for work!!! Passengers in bus plus are usually foreigner mostly.

Teens travel daily to Orchard either by bus (#14) or train from Tanah Merah arrive within 35 -40 minutes. There seems to be about 5 minutes difference between the two modes of transport. Very easy to live out East, cheaper too!
