I have seen posts in this forum about people being laughed at by sporeans because they were caucasians.
I wanted to know if there is any black (afro / caraib) in this forum, living in Singapore and how easy / difficult their integration was?
I am black and will be moving to Singapore in sept with my wife (caucasian) and son ....

Thanks

There are lots of people of African descent hanging out on Serangoon Road, around the Kitchener Rd / Mustafa Centre area.

There are also some African people living in Toa Payoh. They always hang out at the void deck of this block of flats near the MRT.

Darkie to Darlie

Post by corsicafrance » Tue, 27 Sep 2005 12:50 am

When I was young, the toothpaste was called "Darkie" indeed. Nothing got to do wth racism or anything, it's just because Asian have this thinking that black people seem to have the whitest teeth comparing to anybody else (probably just an Asian misconception but then Singapore was not such a cosmo place as now so we don't know or see many other foreigners).

When I grew older, as the country became more international (probably also due to the policy of parent company of "Darkie"). Racism became such a serious & sensitive issue, so, although the initial intention of naming this toothpaste "Darkie", is to convey the idea that if you used "Darkie", you can also have beautiful teeth like black people! However, in order to avoid any possible racist controversy which may arise, they renamed it to "Darlie".
