I'm a non-married expat currently living in Singapore, and I'm considering applying for PR. Before I move forward, I’d like to better understand the potential long-term implications—especially regarding my future family.
I’m aware that second-generation male PRs are subject to NS, but I’m unclear on how exactly that applies. My main concern is ensuring that my future children have agency over their own choices and are not bound by decisions I make today. Should my child want to do NS, I would like it to be their decision once they are old enough to decide.
I would appreciate help with the following questions:
- If my partner and I (once married) are both PRs before we have children, will our children automatically be granted PR at birth? Or do we have to apply for the child after birth? Can we choose not to do so?
- What happens if only one of us is a PR at the time of the child’s birth?
- If a child is granted PR, is there a legal pathway for them to renounce it later? Is there a specific age by which this must be done? Would we need to ensure that no PR-related benefits (e.g., subsidies, education) were used in the meantime?
Thanks in advance for any insights or experiences you can share.
