Warning for Prospective Tenants/Buyers in Condo near Mental Hospital

Post by TAG-2025 » Mon, 12 May 2025 8:23 pm

If you're considering renting or buying a unit in the condo across from the mental health hospital, please take time to research potential noise issues before signing a lease—especially if you're looking at higher floors.

Since last year, a large local Chinese family moved into a neighboring unit. Their lifestyle includes leaving their door open throughout the day, frequent loud gatherings, religious singing, and children playing noisily in the hallway. Despite multiple reminders from condo management, the noise levels have not improved. They've made it clear they have no intention of changing, even telling others that anyone who can't tolerate their lifestyle should "go back to their home country."

Unfortunately, daytime noise (or any noise before 10:30 p.m.) is not regulated under current condo rules or other regulations, so residents living nearby or directly below may face ongoing disturbance.

Due to privacy laws, I cannot disclose the exact unit number. However, I strongly encourage prospective tenants—especially those who value peace and quiet—to speak with current residents about potential noise issues before making any commitments. I plan to share more details, such as the floor level, once we move out next year.

Initially, I thought you were saying neighbours at the mental hospital...

Well, it's not exactly wrong to call them neighbours at the mental hospital — they're noisier than the actual patients in lockdown.

In fact, I find this problem almost anywhere. Even my place we have screaming kids on a daily basis, parents that do nothing about it. When guards tell the kids to quieten down, the parents come after the guards and scold the guards. My neighbourhood also has a lot of party animal parents, so they hold parties till late night without the consideration of others who might be sleeping.

I’m sorry to hear you are also encountering the similar problem. Specifically for my situation, the only thing the neighbor needs to do is just close their front door. But they simply don’t want to do it. Whenever their family is in the living room, the whole corridor literally is all their noise. Unfortunately, with the high-density living, these types of entitled families with no shame stand out even more. This particular family behaves as if the entire floor belongs to them. They talk loudly, laugh, shout, and play videos on speaker as if no one else exists. Even when politely reminded, they ignore it completely — or worse, act as if you're the one being unreasonable. But I’ve been in Singapore for more than 10 years, and this is the first family I have encountered that is completely shameless. It’s not just inconsiderate — it’s a kind of selfishness that comes from believing that the basic decency don’t apply to them. So I personally don’t feel it’s right to indulge this type of unethical behavior. At the very least, I’ll try my best to warn people who may be impacted by this family.

Sounds inconsiderate especially when they're a rowdy bunch.
I think some people are just feeling very entitled, actually closing the door gives you more privacy. Not sure why people enjoy opening up their doors to let their neighbours hear their conversations.
