Yeap. This family friends were Malaysians and been here since the late 1970s. Kids grew up
And went to local schools. So for all
Intents and purposes, they were raised as Singaporeans. But got totally screwed by parents decision. Funny thing, kids were willing to serve. Parents didn’t want them to. So the door to move back to singapore permanently has been forever shut. Now if kid give up PR but parents don’t, maybe the parents Re entry permit will not be renewed. Not sure tho. But pretty sure about consequences for the kids
Very unfortunate and very typical of Malaysians to think they can bend or break the rules... (as so often seen up there).

My colleague from Malaysia (Singapore PR) has 2 sons. He told me that he gave his sons the option to serve NS or skip if they wanted to (by giving up PR). His sons chose to serve and retain their PRs. I told him that was a good decision because they would never get it back had they picked the other option to which his response was "oh we are different, we are Malaysians so we have special privileges" 🫡... I laughed it off and told him that regardless of that, the ICA would have made them pay had they picked the other option.

This is something that a lot of people fail to think long-term… you do not want to just apply first and think later.
It also applies to mixed nationality couples where one parent is a Singaporean. Giving birth to a son in Singapore has major implications if don’t plan to stay in Singapore. I knew such a couple who ended up flying out in the last trimester. They have since settled in the US.

It's the other way around . Singaporeans get away with a lot more in MY than MC get away with here.
