Flash floods in Singapore

Post by abbby » Sun, 24 Nov 2024 11:19 am

Why are there so many incidents of flash floods nowadays? Low lying areas? Or no more forests for rain water to flow? I know Bt Timah Dunearn, Wilby are notorious for floods even since the 1960s,70s. But now it seems many other places are also prone.

Bt Timah Dunearn used to flood up until the mid-80's. I used to live opposite Coronation Plaza up in Watten Estates and owned a car back then. Dicey to say the least.

As they keep building it will cause flooding elsewhere as the monsoon rain waters have to escape the Island somehow in the shortest quickest distance possible. Water had the unique ability to change directions in an instant.

One reason I'm glad I've kept my old Subaru is that it can wade fairly deep waters compared to a normal car.

Two things. Rainfall rates have increased. More rain falls in a given time than it used to. Second, the major rain bursts last longer. Heavier rains, lasting for a longer time, overwhelm the drainage system. Welcome to human induced climate change.

I don't quite agree. When you read of the history of Singapore they talk of "Sumatras" - massive rain storms. I think they've always been here but the huge amount of concrete and paving means what SMS said - water builds up quickly in built up areas. I do agree with climate change BTW.
