Full Cream Milk or Formula Milk?

Post by lalala88 » Wed, 16 Oct 2024 11:23 am

Hi all,

I'm writing in this forum to seek opinion from all mothers here.

Let me jump into the main issue:

My eldest kid is 4 years; while my youngest one is 1 year (18 Months).

Currently, below are the formula milk that they are drinking:

- Eldest -> Grow Stage 4
- Youngest -> NAN optipro stage 3

I was informed that kid's age start from 1 year onwards, can start to drink FULL cream milk. May I know is it true Full cream milk provides more benefits than Formula milk? Do you have any recommendation what full cream milk is suitable for kids age from 1 year - 4 years old?

I started on full cream milk when they turn about 2 years. I give them Meiji full cream milk (those in dark blue caps) as they taste great, I personally consume it too (For adults, low fat version is better). You can get at any supermarkets.

I wean them off formula milk at about 2 years old as they tend to be very sweet and overly expensive.

And yes, they have good benefits for growing children for growth.

Hi @abbby ,

Thanks for your reply. May I know when you give your kids full cream milk, you treat the full cream milk as their daily milk to drink OR like in one day, you give twice time full cream milk and 1 time formula?

At the same time, have you ever tried this brand "Fernleaf" for full cream milk?

And, if full cream milk provides MORE benefit than formula, will it cause anemia deficiency towards the kid since there's NO iron in FULL CREAM milk?

My understanding is that formula milk is ok until the baby is starting to regularly eat solid food (i.e. not just milk). Once they start eating a nutritionally balanced diet regularly they no longer need formula. Usually this start around 1 year old. After this point you can switch to normal full cream milk.

Dad (not mum) here. My girl was drinking formula till at least 2 if I recall correctly. We basically had her on formula for a while longer than what most kids probably need mainly because she is a picky eater and basically wouldn't eat much solid food till quite late.

She's now 4.5 and while her range of foods has improved, she is still not a big eater. I say this for reference, because I know from experience that the moment I say picky eater, most parents imagine that their kid is one too, without understanding that our case was a bit more extreme. We had to go to the feeding clinic at NUH to get help. My daughter at 1 was eating just a tiny amount of bread and cheese if she ate any solid food and barely drank 20 ounces of formula milk on a typical day.

@smoulder As she is 4.5 years old now, have you tried full cream milk to her since she is a picky eater?

Yes. We switched her to full cream milk at approx 2. If I recall correctly, initially she demanded it in a baby bottle.... She's a smart girl and was probably trolling us :D, but eventually we got her to drink it out of an adult cup with her name on it.

I will give twice a day as normal drinking - morning and before bedtime.

It still has iron, just less than formula or breastmilk but that's fine since they are already on solid food, the other foods can make up for it.

I have heard of fernleaf, but I would prefer Meiji/ Magonolia because of the taste , price and availability.

@smoulder Will you feed your daughter full cream milk for long term? OR do you plan to switch to Skimmed milk (low fat milk) in milk powder type in future?

'm quite confuse as currently I'm actually feeding Marigold Full cream milk to my toddler. But, if she really gain abit of weight and will switch to those skimmed milk aka low fat milk, NOT sure should i look for those LOW FAT MILK in packet or LOW FAT MILK in milk powder type one.

Do you have any opinion?

@abbby but, i think full cream milk won't be helpful to boost brain development right? hmm... I'm quite dilemma as I'm not sure should i just stick back to formula milk that will help in BOOSING BRAIN development OR stick to Full cream milk BUT invest in FISH OIL supplement to help in brain development.

Any idea?

My opinion is that people should drink full cream milk in general. But my wife thinks otherwise and she wins so we have all recently switched from meiji full cream (dark blue) to the light blue skim :(

For convenience, use UHT as it lasts unopened outside of the fridge for the longest period of time.
However, some people have been known to complain about the taste vs pasteurised.
