Krisflyer Miles

Post by abbby » Mon, 09 Sep 2024 8:34 am

Can I ask those who are familiar with Kris Flyer, to earn the maximum mileage for the Miles points and when travelling with family, does it mean will need to have a Kris Flyer account for every family member (including children)? And input the Kris membership of every member during the booking?

Yes, every family member will need a KrisFlyer account to earn miles. For SQ/KF, I believe you can only combine one parent's miles with the kids' miles (it also looks like there is a fee for transferring/combining miles).

Depending on where you travel to, you can also put SQ flights on United Mileage Plus, which allows pooling for the whole family (both parents and kids).

Even if you combine all miles in one parent's account then you can still redeem award flights from that account to anyone you want. Just keep in mind that you can only input 5 different people who you will be redeeming tickets for... and after that you might be charged for any change to those redemption nominees.

So make sure they are close family/people you will be redeeming for again in the future and not one-off nominees.

Pretty much. Once your child turns 16 they are de-linked from your account.

They also don't need parental permission to sign-up for KrisFlyer if they are already 16 years-old.

Depending on your flying pattern(s), as in destination(s) and how many family members travel and how often, you might look at other FFPs, especially if you fly other airlines as well.

Lufthansa's Miles & More is a decent FFP for families as it allows miles to be accrued in a family account, so no need to transfer miles before redeeming them.

Virgin Australia is also unique in that it is the only one that also allows STATUS miles to be pooled into the parental account, allowing you to climb up the status ladder much more quickly (which in turn gives you more perks).

@aster Ya will probably open to other airlines as well, SIA miles seems to be quite little and troublesome having to open so many kris flyer accounts and transferring here and there, and even spouse needs another account...lol, so troublesome..

Emirates is another one where the family can pool miles (if going to the US East Coast, there are some decent routes through Dubai. One stop to London isn't terrible either, although worse than a direct flight). I don't believe the kids get "kicked out" after a certain age, but I'm not 100% sure.

You'll have to do this at every FFP because every passenger that accrues miles will need to have their own membership number.

But with FFPs like Miles & More it's at least easier to then redeem miles as the designated head of the household account can see all the miles accumulated by everyone and redeem everything from that account (no need to transfer miles).

Might be a good option for US east coast travel, but I would never take them to Europe due to the inconvenience of having to switch planes roughly half-way. I would rather have a connection somewhere in Asia (Bangkok, HK, etc.) or in Europe, but not in the middle of the journey (especially on a night flight).

On a side note look at the partner airlines of Virgin Australia's Velocity FFP (it's the one I mentioned is the only program in the world that allows you to pool status miles/points).

Not only are they partnered with Singapore Airlines but also Qatar Airway and Etihad if you happen to travel with these airlines as well. This is quite a bonus as Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways belong to rival airline alliances (Star Alliance vs OneWorld) and rarely will a single FFP allow you to collect miles from both.
