Shaun Chen moves family to JB, enrols daughters in international school

Very interesting article and something I can relate with. This guy is aged 45, same age as me. This is the perfect age to when you still have some time left, your kids are young and if you want to eventually retire in your home country, you must make this transition. Otherwise you are stuck here for life.

Except he claims only 30 mins to cross border.

Hopefully the RTS will help.

If the crossing is not a problem, am sure there will be a flood of people moving there. It just makes economic sense. Even more so for retirees. Accoms, food, medicine and even golf is so much cheaper in MSia!

The key point is they are Malaysian. The crossing of border is secondary. They have relocated their kids to JB schools, inspite of having SG PR and the general notion is that SG education is bestest.

But they made that choice to move their kids to JB and put them in intl schools. So they want to bring up their kids as Malaysian and not Singaporean.

I’ve often played out the scenario of living in JB. I would buy a 1650sqft unit at Straits View condo for RM550k (S$165k) and a Honda Beat scooter for RM6k (S$1.8k) to putz around on. My monthly cost of living would be less than RM5k (S$1.5k), and that would include a lot of outings. However, I do believe that would get boring fast.

I have toyed with the idea before too, its always the safety and culture when considering. Quite different from Singapore...

Actually I was looking at the area around Eco Botanic area. Next to Tuas. It has a bit of the Holland Village Vibe, and there are a few "international universities" campus there. It seems safer than the main JB area. More space, near forest city and Horzion hill too. Near to the Parkway hospitals there too.

Actually if Malaysian gov could make the areas safer, I'm sure a lot of us would really want to move there. Given the cost of living so much lower there. I've had friends stayed for a few years in a beautiful gated landed home, but now they're back in Singapore i think commuting is a pain if you have to come Singapore everyday..

Safety is definitely a big concern. I think another consideration will be, the community. If there is a big enough community there, it will definitely helps. It is hard to relocate there without any friends. If a group of retirees decide to move there together, it will be much easier

That area is eerily quiet when it gets dark.

Retiring in Malaysia(if you are a Malaysian) would require 1/3rd the amount you will need in Singapore. So you could move all the way to KL and that solves the commute problem.
I know lots of Malaysians have taken SG PR, I always wonder, would they rather not want to retire early than work in Singapore forever?

In the article they are Malaysians and SG PR and moving to JB is like easing into that decision of eventually fully retiring in Malaysia.
