Shipping a pet - my experience

Post by tiktok » Wed, 14 Aug 2024 12:50 pm

Here's my experience of moving their dog from Singapore to another country. It may help others who are thinking of doing this.

I got quotes from a few pet movers, all were over 7k which seemed ridiculous. So I looked into doing it myself.

Firstly you need to carefully check the requirements of the country you're going to. In my case I only needed a rabies vaccination certificate and a quick inspection when the animal enters the country. There are also a few banned dog breeds. It seems a lot of countries require a health certificate which you have to get from a registered vet a few days before you fly, and you may also need to get it certified by AVS.

Next is the airlines. Some airlines don't take dogs outright, many others ban certain breeds, including brachycephalic (short nose) dogs, which mine is. Also, if you are transiting through a hot country, they often won't take dogs in summer months. In my case I found Japan Airlines simply recommends against flying a brachycephalic breed but let you do at your own risk.

You need a pet carrier approved by the airline. I bought a IATA approved dog crate from Carousell. After buying the human ticket I had to call up Japan Airlines and tell them the size and weight of the crate. I was charged $400 USD extra for the dog.

Lastly you need to play the Singapore red tape game and get a "Licence to Import/Export/Transship Non-food Animals, Birds, Eggs and Biologics" which you can do online. It costs $50 and is valid for 30 days.

You cannot and should not sedate your dog before the flight. You can provide water (like a bird feeder tube thing) but no food. However I taped a ziplock of food on the outside of the crate, just in case. It was not used.

At the airport you simply rock up to check in with dog in crate and the staff take it off. Japan Airlines staff are great. There was some confusion about the missing health certificate, I had to keep explaining that it wasn't needed by the destination country. We changed planes in Tokyo but could not see the dog. Paperwork was checked again and the same questions asked about health certificates.

The total 18 hour journey was incredibly stressful. I was prepared for the worst outcome - a corpse. On arrival I messed up by answering the "no" to the question "are you importing any animal products". There was no inspection at all, just a small customs fee. The worst part was the crate was just dumped in the excess baggage area along with golf bags and bicycles etc. The crate has been ziplocked closed and tightly wrapped with cargo netting. However, dog was absolutely fine when we eventually got him out, and hadn't even peed or shat in the cage for all that time. Amazing creatures. However my dog is very calm and probably just slept through the whole thing.

Total cost was around $500. It's not a great experience for the animal but I can't imagine a professional pet mover would make it better, plus you'll be separated from your pet for longer.

Wow. Good to hear that your dog is fine.

I had to leave my cat behind in India with my sister when I moved here. Your write up serves as a good reminder to me of why that was the right decision.

Thanks for this. We plan to take our ditch kitten to the US when we leave. I'm wondering if in cabin is possible. I've heard it may be possible on SQ?

Wow thanks for sharing, amazing how you can do it yourself, and saved so much money. Now, we can imagine the profit those pet movers make...at least $6k.

Similarly, getting a helper without an agency is what I do now...saves me $3-4k easily on agency fees. And I get things done faster without their help. And it's also easier to switch helpers in case it's not suitable rather than being stuck with the helper with upfront fees.

But you still have ”a guy” to do the paperwork, right? We do the same.

The last time I checked on this, some airlines allowed small dogs or cats in the cabin on international flights (even if allowed, some airlines also have restrictions by cabin class) while other airlines required pets to be in the cargo hold.

I believe Lufthansa is (or at least was) more pet friendly. I believe SQ will only allow assistance dogs in the cabin now. Keep in mind, these rules/regulations are constantly changing.

I was told that when pets are allowed in the cabin, the pet and it's carrier must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. Also species are mutually exclusive, e.g. if there are cats in the cabin, there can be no dogs or birds.

Yes on the above. For this reason, some airlines indicate that you can't take a pet in the cabin in the premium seating.

Honestly, I'm not sure I'd want to bring a pet in the cabin (depends on the pet's personality / calmness). Although I can imagine it is stressful either way (watching the pet's behaviour in the cabin or wondering if it is still alive).

My daughter has a rabbit and is going off to college in the US next month. I have half a mind to have her bring it along.

Exporting a pet out of SG is usually easier than importing a pet into SG.

The close to 14 steps for importing a pet into SG on AVA website is enough to turn anyone off and if you’re from a Category D country, good luck trying to DIY the import.

Importing my husband’s cat from US to SG was very challenging. Who knew not all the 50 states do rabies antibody testing and not all 50 states have a USDA certified veterinarian. Husband’s cat’s blood was shipped to Kansas for testing and the paperwork had to be shipped to Atlanta for the vet to endorse it.

We weren’t there in the US, my in-laws were looking after the cat and we had no choice but to use the pet relocation service.
