I keep getting the one where the woman is speaking in Chinese about being from the police. Had my daughter translate for me. Blocked the numbers but new ones come up frequently.

Visited the movies yesterday to watch long legs (whole other story) And one of the ads before they started screening the film was for a anti-spam call app. Can't remember the name, but I'm guessing there's only one endorsed by the government.

ScamShield app

Any new scam msg or calls, just report it to the app.

They usually use robotic voice calls and I hang up within two seconds.

Have you tried it? Does it work? I do the same, but once in a while, I get so fed up that I yell a couple curses before I hang up.

I usually just don’t answer calls from numbers I don’t recognize - - if it’s important they will leave a message.

However, once in a while (like now) I have an enquiry into my bank and they insist on calling me back in 5-7 days (and it’s always some random number and they refuse to leave a message). In such a case, I will pick up the call during the 5-7 day window, but remain silent until the other party says something.

Been doing that these past two days and the first call was from the Singapore High Court, second Standard Chartered - both were recordings and obviously not who they claimed to be. It’s just a nuisance.

Don’t speak - they can steal your voice imprint.

Anyone calls my number and speaks Chinese… they get snubbed immediately… they obviously have no idea who they are calling.

They can speak until they are blue in the face for all I care, I wouldn’t even bother to try to understand a single word.

I guess it works as intended.

It relies on other people reporting the number in the app. If no one reports it, then the scam number can keep harassing others. So far after installing the app, the frequency of new scam calls is 0-3 times a week. I just report the new number to get it done and over with.

I’ve also tried malcontent’s “don’t speak till they speak” a few times and there was once the other party didn’t speak for at least 5 seconds. (Turned out to be a genuine call that was town council related)

An alternative is to just murmur a “Hm?” to get them to talk before I hang up if it’s nonsense.

If you use PayNow or PayLah which shows your name that is related to your number, just change the name to an initial. I once got the “Do you remember me? I’m an old friend” scam call ‘cos of this. Arsehole had the cheek to say “You don’t remember me? I’m someone close to you” all done in Mandarin.

Joke’s on him, I’m a banana, my husband doesn’t speak Mandarin, my parents default to English with me. It was too easy to weed out. On hindsight, I should have replied “Aren’t you dead? I attended your funeral last week.” or “You still owe me money, where is it?”

Truly annoying. I'd like to say who's falling for this crap but obviously some people are or they wouldn't keep doing it.

Right. I just got curious after a few calls as the script seemed to be the same.

Good idea! I'll try the ''Mmmm'' or ''Ah-ha''...to the caller next time because they tend to hear your voice then the automated message starts.

I had the one who call me and speak Mandarin too, 'remember me? With a deep malaysian accent, obviously can guess he's the scammer.

Anyway the scamshield I've been using for ayear seems pretty useless? I add the scammer's number and it replies, 20 people have report this number. So why do they still not ban them when there are already 20 people reporting it? Not sure the purpose of this scam shield app.

Lol, reminds me of those videos of people getting revenge on scammers on YouTube. My favorite one is when they called out the scammer by name while on call and he freaked out.
