Citizenship rejection, any advice?

Post by zlmicro » Wed, 17 Jul 2024 11:50 pm

Dear community,

I just got rejected for my citizenship application. I'm feeling a bit lost and hoping to get some help with figuring out what to do next...

After a lengthy 20-month wait, I received the rejection letter from ICA last week. It was not at all what I had anticipated.

Here is a brief summary of my situation. My family moved to Singapore from China 8 + years ago. I applied for citizenship alone in my last submission. My son, in his JC, received his citizenship two years ago before I started applying for my citizenship. For my wife and I, this August will be our first REP renewal. I am 52 years old. I obtained my PhD degree in a medical school and currently hold an assoc. director position in an MNC. My monthly income is around 15.5k Singapore dollars. We have a property in Singapore. My wife doesn’t have a job in Singapore, so I put in “unemployed” when submitting my wife's employment information as a non-applying spouse. My wife is a freelancer and has a business in China.

Was my wife's employment status stated mistakenly in the submission?

There is not much information in the rejection letter only indicating that I may submit an application again if there is a change in my circumstances.

What would be my next step, make an appeal or reapply after 6 months?

If you could share your insight or comments I would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

So you two (and your son I guess) only got PR 5 years ago? People usually wait to apply for SC after one REP renewal.

Why didn’t you apply SC together with your son 2 years ago?

You didn’t mention whether your family has spend majority of your time in SG or overseas in the past 5 years.

You didn’t mention your wife’s age either. But you are a little old which might be a negative factor.

He mentioned he applied alone. Not including wife might be the reason of rejection.

The paragraph was too wordy, missed out the part where he applied for SC solo. Then yes, very suspicious to apply SC without wife.

I think it's both you and your wife's age...moreover, Singapore's an aging population so your citizenship will likely add on to the current aging population very soon. That's what I could think of.

Thank you for your comments and questions. I was not ready when my son applied his SC. We primarily resided in SG and only made occasional trips outside of the country, such as back to China once or twice a year. My wife is the same age as me.

You see, your son's is young so there's definitely an advantage when it comes to age..

This is the main reason and if you had not included your wife, that plays a factor too.

You may reapply after 2 years and if rejected, assume it is mostly the final decision. As a PR and also parent of a SC, you should still be ok to continue to reside her long without much challenges

It would be my guess that the gahmen has decided that you don't have the financial resources to remain in Singapore over the long haul. As PR, you have put very little money into CPF, so it's clear, from that perspective, that you don't have sufficient resources for retirement. At 52, 15 to 20 years of work will still not provide a major nest egg.

OTOH, if you have substantial investments to support you and your wife for the rest of your life, then I'd file an appeal that includes your financial information. If you can prove that you wouldn't be a future burden on Singapore, then I suspect they might welcome someone with passive income who takes no jobs from locals.
