Expat forum " seem dead ? "

Post by SGBoyxxx » Sun, 10 Mar 2024 8:38 pm

Noticed the forum no much activity.

I think millennials, GenX and baby boomers used forums. I am a millennial and when I came to Singapore in 2009, I used this forum extensively as this was my goto place.

I think this forum reached it's peak around 2014-15.

Since then social media has taken over and the Gen Z who are moving to Singapore use Reddit and Facebook groups.

Lots of millennial expats moved out of Singapore over the last decade and because the Gen Z didn't come to this forum, there is this vacuum now.

Now we only see millennials who were expats in the past and are PR/SC now still participate here.

Alot of regulars aren't so regular these few months for various reasons.

Some of them do pop in once a while. I do hope they post more often, the board is their voices for the past 2 decades.

Wd40 summed it up perfectly.

Forums are my goto places online too.

@SGBoyxxx I still don't see the point of IG and tiktok, mostly photos and videos with no real information.

I dislike Facebook, Tiktok, Threads, Twitter, IG. They are a reptition of one another. And doesn't bring more value into our lives except wasting a lot of time.

It's because when a new member joins and asks an innocent question, a bitter old timer will scold them for their (entirely imagined) 'entitlement' and go off on a big rant, like Grandpa Simpson.

fwiw, I've seen some of the replies to SG immigration topics on reddit and they are.. way off. I started browsing here years ago because this forum proved to have more accurate info. Also I'm not scared of curmudgeons.

Precisely..I've seen very odd answers there before. Can't quite trust those sources. I mean the demographics of users here have better life experience and are well-educated.

The GenZs are using IG and Tiktok. Some are on reddit. Many of them use Discord. It is very rare for them to use forums and FB. I am GenX. I can see the allure of short videos (tiktok, reels). They are addicting but they are a time waster and not really a source of useful information.
