After 1 year long waiting, my PR is finally apprved but i have already planned to move out of the country and unlikely to return in near future.
what's the pros and cons if we get the PR status before leaving? If my family and i don't return in 5 years, the PR will be lapsed anyway?
and if i change plan to stay here, how long does it take to get the SC? We are HK chinese and son is in local primary school.

Hello, I remember your case and thought you had a reasonable chance despite the short time in Singapore. Where you are headed to (if you care to mention) and how certain are you that you won't be coming back here?

We will move to countries with clearer citizenship program. I am considering to get the PR status and use REP to move. If the citizenship does not work out in 2.5 years, we will move back (REP is 5 years). Otherwise, we will let the REP lapse and PR status is auto gone.
However, I am not sure if this affects my son when he grows up and wants to work here. My PR is approved for whole family.

If you accept PR and then let it lapse, your son’s NS obligation will still be there. He will not be able to work and live in Singapore if you let the PR “expire” like that without completing NS.

Thank you so much. This is my concern. Pls don't get me wrong, I am absolutely fine and agree that boys should be sent to do NS. However, if we always stay in another country and are no longer a "PR" for 10+ years, I don't think I can convince my son to do NS.

Best to search some of the archives here.
If you retain the PR status past your son's 13th birthday (which the first REP should cover), you will need to comply with the Exit Permit requirements. I believe giving up the PR beyond this age will likely have an impact on him (and any others in your family).
Whether you let the IPA lapse or take it and give it up before his 13th birthday, I am not sure it is clear cut one way or the other. It is generally frowned upon (possibly increasingly so over the years), but people are self-interested, so only you can decide if obtaining the status for an interim period is worth it.
Personal opinion is that you will have a good chance to get SC applying 2 - 5 years after you obtain PR (or after you return). If your son is locally educated, he will have a very high chance of getting SC for himself.
Anyone else please feel free to add or correct.

Now this is what most locals here dont like about giving pr to foreigners who dont value the pr and just take it for granted. There are many who are dying to get pr and know its value, but you are contemplating about whether to leave it if not getting sc in near future and unlikely to return? Getting pr is not easy, so since you have been given pr as you are of preferred ethnicity kindly dont abuse it. If I have said the same exact words as in your post, many here will say im abusing pr and im burning the bridges and wasting it. Kindly give respect to the pr status, and better not to apply if you feel your future is not in sg, so that at least other applicants from HK who want to settle here can make use of it.
