REP Renewal once retired.... and not 'residing' a lot in Singapore

Post by PNGMK » Fri, 05 Jan 2024 7:57 pm

I'm wondering what the hive mind thinks happens to REP renewals for those of us over the retirement age (I'll be there soon) and who are on the move around the world? Provided we maintain a base in Singapore will REP renewal happen? I don't think I have seen any guidelines or discussions on this except for oblique acknowledgements that REP renewal is possible for retired PR's.

It came up in parliament a few years back:

"About 2% were rejected, largely because they were absent from Singapore for a prolonged period, and furthermore had no family roots here. "

OK to PTS PR are out which makes some sense but the rest should be ok. Thanks for the link.

Answer:

1. A Re-Entry Permit (REP) may be renewed if the Permanent Resident (or PR) meets the prevailing criteria for renewal, including whether he or she is gainfully employed and still contributing to Singapore, and his or her family roots here. For PRs who have retired, we will generally renew their REPs, in recognition of their past contributions to Singapore.

2. In the last five years, approximately 52,400 retired Singapore PRs applied to renew their REPs. About 2% were rejected, largely because they were absent from Singapore for a prolonged period, and furthermore had no family roots here. This rejection rate is similar to that from 2010 to 2014.

My wife's friend (Malaysian Chinese) in her 40s (so nowhere near retirement age) moved with her husband to Australia. Her REP renewal was rejected.

So by the same token, someone who is above the retirement age and is mostly not in Singapore, may also have their REP renewal rejected.

That's a completely irrelevant case.

My folks moved out of SG 6-7 years back, are officially “retired”, though my dad’s company is still registered in Singapore and its address listed as my home address.

They also visit SG almost every year.

Their REP renewal 2 years ago was for the full 5 years.
