Korean American with Chinese last name

Post by anonping » Mon, 01 Jan 2024 9:07 pm

Hello,

This might sound a little ridiculous. Please hear me out. I'm a Korean-American (ethnic Korean with American nationality) with a last name that sounds Chinese. Think Song, Kang, Lee, Chung, etc. I also look more Chinese than Korean (as many of my Chinese friends have pointed out). If I put Chinese as my ethnicity for my PR application, would they ask for proof of Chinese ancestry?

Off-topic and out of curiosity: how would a Chinese American adoptee (adopted to white parents) go about proving Chinese ancestry if they were to apply for PR?

Thanks

Have you watched K-dramas? There are plenty of Korean actors with Lee, Song, etc.

Why lie if you’re not Chinese?

Birth certificate would have biological parents details, wouldn’t it?

There are a small percentage of ethnic Chinese in Korea, so being from Korea does not guarantee that you are ethnic Korean.

Have your done a 23-and-me?
Are you able to find your biological parents?
Ancestry.com can help you find relatives who have submitted their DNA test, in case you had any brothers or sisters who were also adopted.

With all of that said, I wouldn’t put too much hope that your ethnicity would tip the scales… beyond ethnicity, “cultural affinity” is a key factor they are looking at, and being an American doesn’t do much for you in that regard.

My ex-colleague at Korea office having the same last name as me. He thought I was Korean who work oversea. When we have a call, he talk to me in Korean. When I told him, I'm not Korean, I'm chinese. He kind of shock. As we having the same last name.

When my family went to Vietnam tour, the tour guide told us. When he saw our last name, he thought we are oversea Vietnamese, as Vietnamese also have that last name. But he change his mind when he pick up us at airport bcoz we dont look at Vietnamese.

Therefore, use last name to act as other race is [-X

And why you want to pretend as Chinese while you are not.

Probably because Chinese have approx 100x better chances of getting PR than Koreans.

While Chinese has largest quota for PR applications, being Chinese does not guarantee having PR approved. I’ve known some PRC Chinese getting rejected.

Be truthful for applications and don’t lie. ICA has ways to find out.

I've been out of the fray for a while, and when I was in Singapore, it was "common knowledge" that while Malaysian and Indonesian Chinese would be welcomed, the same was not true of PRC Chinese for the simple reason of fear... fear that significant PRC populations in Singapore could be used to orchestrate disarray in Singapore society, further, that PRC Chinese wouldn't be able to become fully disconnected from the thugocracy that is China.
