3 year REP renewals will be tough. Like SMS I had ten year renewals at one time - including one when I was based in Shanghai!
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or
http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

I thought that as long as you don't leave Singapore your PR is intact?
This is true... but imagine never leaving Singapore for any reason. No bopping over to Bintan or Batam for a round of golf or a weekend getaway with the wife. No travel on business. No trips home to your home country. With no REP, an emergency trip abroad means that you are instantly disrupted from your Singapore life. That's a rather tenuous grasp on your place of residence.
I agree. I was just wondering if shortening the REP is in fact a desire to ask PRs to leave as Deskmoney23 was alluding. I don't see it as much of an issue if I don't plan to take long trips away from Singapore anyway.

I would just point out and comment that how many years they actually renew your REP for (e.g. 3 years) may have some other reasons that have nothing to do with ICA wanting you to give up your PR. In fact I think ICA tends to give you a lot of leeway when renewing your REP because they don’t want to take that away from you just like that.
Case in point my sis. Went overseas to do her post grad and is now living and working overseas. Yet ICA has been renewing her REP every year for the past 3 years even though she hasn’t lived here or been back here.

I've been a PR for 19 years. Just went through the renewal process and instead of the near immediate turn around, we had to wait 2 weeks. It's now approved, but only for 2 years. No reasons given as to why it's now shorter. Was wondering if anyone else has seen similar.
Have been gainfully employed in a senior role for a large MNC for quite a while now. I'll be 60 in 2 years time so still under the retirement age where I know the ICA start taking a closer look at things.

For a PTS scheme PR that may make some sense as you're not likely to retire here on the PTS scheme anyways. Family ties folks like SMS are far more likely to retire here.

I just renewed my REP and was given another 5 years for my whole family. I am not sure why my family was given 5 years and why the OP was given only 3.

5 years is standard. Anything less suggests the ICA aren't convinced about your "your continued contribution to the community and economy" enough to be granted 5 years.
Now, what their concerns are about "your continued contribution to the community and economy" is the mystery that the ICA don't seem willing to divulge.
