SC Chances

Post by mystic_river » Thu, 14 Dec 2023 1:55 pm

Hello everyone,

Been a long time since I have logged in/looked at the forum so I'm starting a new thread to gain some insight on SC application (i.e. I am not sure what has changed, what the latest trends are, etc.)

You can look at my profile from my previous posts but a very short profile to recap:

Age: 35
Single
Nationality: Pakistani
Came to SG in 2000. PR since 2005 (got it under my parents as I was still below 21)
Studied in local sec sch/JC/uni
Current occupation: solution architect in a tech firm
Basic salary: $12000 pm
Family is PR but currently not living in SG at the moment
Own my own condo
NS: exempted.

Application history:

1st app in 2013: tried to apply over the counter at ICA (when you could still do that). Officer didn't even accept the application as salary was too low ($3300 pm at that point) so i won't even consider that as an application

2nd app in 2018: Applied in April 2018 with a salary of $5600 pm, got rejected in Feb 2019.

I should point out that I was not working between May 2019 to July 2020. Lost job due to company restructuring

3rd app in 2021: Applied in April 2021 with salary of $7000 pm, changed job in April 2022, salary increased to $9600 pm, which I updated ICA about. Rejected in July 2022.

I lost my job again in Jan 2023 due to the tech layoffs and restarted working in Jul 2023.

I plan to apply again next year but had a couple of questions:

1. The job gaps that I have - will it affect my chances? Reason I ask, job gaps affect the amount of tax I pay. My tax for 2023 is gonna be quite low compared to Y2022.

2. I am single. At this age, do I expect a chance for approval being single? I have looked at some past threads and noticed the only people of South Asian origins who got their SC approved were either applying as a family or their SC spouse sponsored them.

3. For my next application, other than my new job (higher pay), coupled with 1-2 certifications I have done for job up skilling, there aren't any significant changes. Is it worth applying again next year?

Dude, you should get it on sheer tenacity alone. Unfortunately, that's just my take.

That said, from what I can see anyway, I just don't think that denying you is the better of the 2 options.

Good luck to you.

One question is how are you exempted from NS as a second-generation PR?

Gonna be tough ‘cos you’re single and low racial quota. SG values babies, go get married, preferably to a local. Think from ICA’s POV, why grant citizenship to a single who isn’t going to help increase the population?

And be continuously employed for two solid years instead of having so many gaps…

Was never called up for NS. Called MINDEF and they said I’m not required to do NS. I asked why and they said the reason is confidential.

Rumor has it some PRs/citizens of certain nationalities do not have to do NS due to national security.

I have other Pakistani friends who became PR, didn’t get called up to do NS, and went on to get their citizenships.

Well, as long you have the black & white NS exemption from MINDEF, then that’s no longer an issue.

Just get married lah.

Will advise you to review your application details. There honestly aren't any personal factors that are actively hindering your chances for a citizenship. The logical conclusion will be that there are problems with your citizenship application process.

Not going to be easy especially if you have had breaks in your career few times. It is just my view and I hope to be wrong.

Don't think re-applying will make much difference especially when the job had some major changes and you just changed a new job . Unless you're planning to get married, or something different.

I have a former colleague who is Pakistani origin and is a SC by right of birth I believe. Both he and his brother have done NS. His brother was keen to do OTC however and was rejected - most likely for similar reasons. Their mother by the ways is Singaporean, it's their dad who is Pakistani but is back in Pakistan as he couldn't get PR or SC.

You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!
