Non-resident tax- will company know employee work outside singapore?

Post by ccs00 » Mon, 04 Dec 2023 2:10 pm

Hi everyone,

Seeking help advice.
I am PR.
Due to significant rising rental cost in Singapore, I am weighing option to work outside Singapore >183 days - which fall under non-resident tax.

My company is allow us to work from home all this time and employees are rarely to go to office.

I don't really want to inform my manager/ company that I am not residing in Singapore, as nowadays lots of companies are firing people due to high cost and prefer to hire employee in lower cost countries.

My questions:
1. What if company don't know I am residing outside Singapore?
2. Will company is the one that report I am residing outside Singapore or individual to report self declare after company submit income report?
3. Is company & IRS talk to each other? i.e. company declare i am residing in Singapore all these times, but im not. Will IRS revert back and correct it?

Thank you for the advice, and kindly please no judgement here.

A lot of issues have been mentioned. I'd add that if you do this, use your own VPN with a Singapore server. Many people get caught out by IT blocking or catching a non Singapore IP address logging in.

My guess since you are a PR. Your CPF contributions every month may not allow you to do whatever you are planning - namely claiming to be a non resident while being an employed permanent resident.

Plus ICA will have records of you exiting the country with your own passport. A bit difficult to renew REP if you’re not in SG majority of the time.

https://www.ica.gov.sg/news-and-publica ... 0to%20both.

ICA reminds all Singapore Residents (Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents) that it is their responsibility to update their residential addresses to ensure that they remain contactable. The penalty for failing to report a change of address is a fine of up to S$5,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or to both.

Be careful, your company could end up being considered tax resident in the country that you spend the most time in.
They will not be happy with you if it is not a country that they intended to be tax resident in

Well, happy for you that you feel that way. You will mostly get good input and consideration from positive and non-judgmental people on this forum as long as you dont say you are an indian from india. If you had said that you are from india, you might have got mocked here, as i have seen this here a lot. Not all the times, but majority of the responses are like that once they post here as an indian regarding work pass/ pr/sgc application. Anyway, i hope this would change in the coming times.

Nonetheless, this forum is informative and can learn a lot from the pr subforum posts from present and past years.

I thought if PR reside out of Singapore and still under employed in Singapore entity, still contribute to PR automatically (as it's auto deduct)?
Only need to declare non-resident during income tax report?
Apologies to ask these, as I am not sure either.

yes this forum is a good forum to seek opinion and always very positive :) :) :)
have been reading this since the first time I moved to Singapore.
