Seeking advice on citizenship

Post by sgexpat8977 » Mon, 27 Nov 2023 1:11 pm

Dear Everyone,

I apologize if you come across this post again.

I was granted my Permanent Residency (PR) status a year ago. Over the past year, I have been checking the ICA portal frequently to see if I am eligible to apply for citizenship. However, every time I tried, the system prompted me to first fulfill the minimum residency requirement of 2 years after obtaining PR.

But, three weeks ago, when I checked the portal again, I was finally allowed to submit my application for citizenship along with my son. Unfortunately, my wife is not eligible to co-apply as the system indicates that she has not met the minimum residency requirement since obtaining her PR, even though she obtained it at the same time as me.

I am unsure if it is a system error that allowed me to apply or if it is a legitimate change in my eligibility status. Hence, I am seeking advice on whether I should proceed with my application or not. I am concerned that if it is a mistake, my application could be rejected automatically.

Thank you in advance for your guidance!

Whether it allows you or not is a moot point. What you need to do is maximise your chance of getting it.

What makes you think you will get it if you apply now?

"I am unsure if it is a system error that allowed me to apply or if it is a legitimate change in my eligibility status"

may make sense to call up ICA to check on this.

Thanks! My purpose is to check whether this is a very rare incident or if there have been several precedents.

@epo_anonymous Thanks! Each case is distinct and treated on its own merits. As the variables that are used to judge citizenship applications are "mostly" unknown, the lower bound of this function is hard to maximize. Hence discussing this maximization problem may often lead to biased and noisy estimators. Thanks anyway.

As i know it's 'open' to people who studied here and as a PR for at least 1 year.
https://www.ica.gov.sg/reside/citizenship/apply :
a PR studying in Singapore; and have been residing/living in Singapore for more than 3 years (of which, at least one year as a PR); and have passed at least one national exam (i.e. PSLE, GCE ‘N’/‘O’/‘A’ levels), or are in the Integrated Programme (IP).
I have also heard cases where people tried to apply first, and by the time any ICA officer pick up your profile for approval, you would have fulfilled the 2 years requirement.

BUT imo it's best to apply when you are truly eligible to reduce any risk.

Almost sounds like a ChatGPT response doesn't it.
