Landlord entering room w/o notifying

Post by MittenMint » Sat, 28 Oct 2023 10:45 am

Hello people, is it okay for tenant to install security cam in the rented room?

Reason being: Landlord often visit the unit (without notifying tenant) and will enter the rooms with his spare keys, got to know abt it as housemates told us. As the unit is occupied by full female tenants, we are all worried abt this issue. Tried to told the landlord off before, but he said that it's his unit and he likes to come in and check if everything is okay.. :(

it would be better to change the lock of your room door with new set of keys without the owner having access to it. rather than installing cameras in your own room. more of a privacy issue.

Precarious situation... on one hand it is his home so installing cameras may void your deposit. On the other hand his behavior is absolutely inappropriate.

Arguably, this is more problematic since it is a structural change made to the home.

It'll be hard to change the lock cause it's a full doorknob.. so I'm thinking of putting a security cam and only on it when I'm not home or travelling.. He even requested us to not lock the room before :(

It'll be a full doorknob if I'm to change this, so thinking of security cam as a better option :(

So you are renting a room, right?
Any stuff kept by the landlord (LL) in your room?
What the tenancy agreement (TA) says about the LL access to the rooms?

Yes, you can install security camera in your room for sure, but not in the common room. You don't need to ask permission or notify anybody about this if this is your room only. By installing I mean using some monitoring/recording device, not drilling holes etc etc. If there is nothing in the TA allowing the LL to access your room, then he should not do this and it may be considered even a criminal offense.

Yes, I'm renting a room. Landlord did not keep anything inside the room, as it's fully rented by me. Yeah, nothing in TA mentioned that.. Will get a small cam 🥲
