Achievements and Innovation Section in PR

Post by rva_raghav » Wed, 06 Sep 2023 4:48 pm

Hi folks, for those who have had their PR approved, could you please provide some guidance on what to include in achievements and innovation section of the PR application? If you work in IT, how do you go about highlighting your achievements? I am planning to emphasize the following:
  • How my contributions have created an impact and consequently led to an increase in revenue.
  • How my contributions have benefited Singapore (for instance, I worked for a renewable energy firm and helped automate their business processes which led to increased efficiency gains and revenue).
  • My promotions and bonuses.
  • I don't have volunteering experience but I have done some volunteering activities for my company. I am not sure if that counts as a volunteering experience and that I can mention it in this passage
  • Professional certifications
Does it make sense to include the above points from different companies and projects I have worked on in Singapore? How should I structure my answer to this question? Do I need to get a testimonial from the employer for the PR application along with this?

Any advice on drafting a compelling response would be greatly appreciated.

The last thing you want is a "trying to blow your own horn" cover letter in that field. Achievements and/or innovations? Basically it's a place where you could list the titles and numbers of any patents, or Titles of peer-reviewed published works with the reference Library of Congress numbers, etc. About the only thing you listed above that might be relevant would be the last one and that only needs the title of the certifications (if it's a professional one as they will already know it anyway). Volunteering is a waste of time as those bridges were all burned by PR seekers in the past, who once they got their PR, vanished from the organizations they were volunteering with/for. You own countrymen burned the bridges for you before you got here.

It's not a place to write "listen to me blow up inconsequential facts that are more fiction than fact with all the superlatives added in". It's not a place for compelling response but a place to list data. As you are already into IT, don't be a victim of your own admonishments regarding data. "Garbage in - garbage out!"

Achievements and Innovation Section in PR

Thank you for your reply. So if bonuses and promotions doesn’t qualify I’ll just highlight my professional certifications. I have gotten 9 certifications so far. Should I just list all of them in bullet points? And that’s it?

Initially I was thinking of writing it in a story format where I talk about how I got bonus within a span of 6 months when I was working for a renewable energy industry but considering what you’re saying I am not sure if that will work out.

Disclaimer: The following are just my thinking and insights. They are not facts and i dont encourage anyone to blindly accept it.

If you are from the favoured race, you can just leave the Achievements and innovation section blank, if you want. Or you can just state a few sentence that you think are the achievements in your career. If you are from the unfavoured race (like you and me), i dont think it matters much even if you write anything in this achievements section. Because, every person applying for pr (especially us indians) would write a few paragraphs to make it look like their achievements are bigger. Every person might have contributed and achieved something in their work and would highlight everything. So in general, it might be very difficult to say which applicant's achievement is greater, as it would look like more than 80% of applicants have similar achievements. You want to say about your patents? Well, there are many people who will put similar certifications, awards, publications and what not. If your achievements are in the demanded occupations list, may be it will have an effect. However, just because you are in a demanded job, example say machine learning, it does not mean that you would be preferred. It also depends on the company you work and whether that machine learning project's product or output is serving the country's objective in some way.

But if you ask me, i would say just write whatever you think are the contributions or achievements you did in your job. It need not be several paragraphs, but few bullet points may be enough. Even if you want to write it like in a cover letter format, try to make sure most of the content in it is regarding your actual achievement instead of boasting too much. In short, i would say you can write whatever you feel is justifiable for your own conscience as an achievement that you did.

The "Achievements and Innovation Section in PR" is a pivotal component of any public relations strategy. This section serves as a showcase of an organization's noteworthy accomplishments and its commitment to innovation. In today's fast-paced and competitive business environment, effectively communicating these achievements is crucial for building and maintaining a positive brand image.
hmm :-o These words remind me of something. They look very similar to the way those pr application agency people would say. May be i am just delusional

Thanks, yes it make sense to list the achievements in bullet points but aside from promotions and bonuses, I can’t think of any achievements at the moment. For now, I have listed all my professional certifications.

Some of the replies here are quite contradicting to what was initially said and my plan is to just list all the professional certifications that I have achieved. Nothing more.

I really appreciate your reply. I just wanted to know if promotions and bonuses qualify as achievements. For example, in my first job, I was rewarded a bonus within just 6 months of joining. So, I wanted to know if this is something I can mention. I completely understand that there's no point in blowing your horn too much, so I'll keep it simple but wanted to know this.

It was and has been subsequently deleted (from Hanoi - very common).

No. Nada. Do not do it. Negative.

Clear enough?

Just follow SMS’ advice and KEEP THINGS SIMPLE. Mundane things like taking a shower in 10 seconds isn’t an achievement either. If I was an ICA officer I would throw out applications that can’t follow basic instructions.

If you think bonuses and common certifications are the achievements, and writing some code is innovative enough, and the fact that the company makes some profit based on that code, then you should also put in this section your education records including primary, driving license, sea kayak 1 star certificates and padi diver certs too. And don't forget the achievement of securing your current job and landing in Singapore with valid resident visa/WP.

You should see the achievements as something that makes you stand out of the crowd of the other applicants, not some fulfillment of your personal or professional goals.
