Exit Permit Technicalities (16.5 years and above)

Post by Aurilius » Sun, 03 Sep 2023 11:59 am

Hey everyone,

My son is attending an International School in Thailand. I just received the letter informing me of exit permit requirements as my son's 13th birthday just passed. First I would like to make it clear that we have every intention to let him return to do his National Service.

Based on my research and reading the forums, I understand that:
1.) Applying for the first exit permit for up to 364 days is not an issue
2.) My son and I will need to be in Singapore to apply for a renewal of the first permit
3.) I will need to post a bond or find two sureties once he hits 16.5 years of age in order to stay outside of Singapore for more than 3 months

My questions would be:
1.) Would I need documentary proof in order to apply for the exit permit (e.g. course of study, letter from school etc.), or is it simply just a straightforward declaration?
2.) Anyone did this renewal and do they know what this involves (e.g. how to do it, where to go, how long we need to be in Singapore
3.) Thailand is not very far and we do go back every now and then to visit my parents. Should my son return to Singapore once every 89 days to visit, is applying for the exit permit even necessary?

If anyone has faced the same situation and can offer some advice I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

I think you have it worked out. < 16.5 you can apply for a permit for 1 year and 364 days with no bond.

After 16.5 you will need to post a bond unless you keep to short trips - if he is winding up studies at 17 for example this might work without posting a bond.

But maybe I would not rely on coming back every 89 days as ICA may decline to let your son exit once they see a pattern - I would get a permit sorted if you expect him to be studying until close to 18. 18 is the risky age as they need to report. Provided he reports you often have a lull period of sometimes up to a year until they are called up.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

take as information sharing only, for exact details contact official, first time apply your son should be in sg, because you should mention date of leaving, Otherwise you can also send email to department to get the permit, it may work. For an year permit, usually no need any docs, enter the information. Can do renewal from overseas through online, you have to do it before expiry well in advance. Want to stay more than 2 years continuous then require bond etc.,
