Living expenses in Singapore

Post by albertl » Mon, 11 Apr 2005 5:46 pm

Hello!

I am moving to Singapore from Sweden with my wife in the middle of July 2005. We shall study at NUS but we shall live outside of campus. I have a few questions on the living expensives in Singapore.

1. How much is the typical rate for a 1 bedroom condo-apartment?

2. Will the 2 of us survive on around 3000-3500 S$ / month if we live outside of campus?

3. Can you give us any hints on where to save money in a budget?

4. Is it easy to rent an apartment in Singapore? Hints?

Thanx!

It all depends on what kind of life style you want. You should be able to rent 1 room condo at between $1000-$2000. If it's outside of the city area,it could be cheap. I think you can save the money on food and shopping! If you eat at the local restaurants or food court, the meal only cost at $2.50-$$10. And if you like to cook at home, you can get the vegitables and meat at wet market, and they are really cheap! Or if you are not confortable with local style....you still can go to the supermarket.
Don't worry! There are many different life styles in Singapore, and they are all fun!

Grad Student Apartments

Graduate students may apply for the Graduate Student Apartment (GSA) at the Prince George's Park Residences, or the university's off-campus residence at Gillman Heights.

Priority is given to married graduate students applying for stay with their spouse / children in GSA.

Rental is S$200 per week for Type I and S$160 per week for Type II. Rental is charged on a semester basis (17 weeks). A unit and key deposit of S$800 and advance rental of S$800 per month is payable before key collection / check-in.

Thank you verry much for the replies.

Any hints on how to apply for an apartment?

And when to start applying (we are arriving the 14th of July 2005)?

Can I apply for the NUS apartment even though I am a undergraduate exchange student?

If u're an undergraduate exchange student, you will most probably get a single room in Prince George's Park (one of the student hostels on campus). Unfortunately, the apartments are only reserved for graduates.
