Advice from expats who found jobs in Singapore without company relocation

Post by Sofia Nguyen » Sun, 13 Aug 2023 11:57 pm

Hi community :)

I'm seeking advice and/or referral to find jobs in Singapore.

I'm born in Vietnam and grew up in Denmark. For the past 1,5 years, I decided to move out of my comfort zone in Copenhagen to live abroad. I'm now working for a Danish company in Thailand. My next move is to Singapore because I fell in love with the place when I visited for the first time 2 months ago.

I have 6+ years experience in Marketing, within software, FinTech and offshore staffing industries. I'm looking for a mid-senior level Marketing position.

I have been researching jobs primarily on LinkedIn.

My questions are:

1. What number 1 job portal do you recommend for job search in Singapore?
2. How did you find your job here?
3. If you know of any companies looking for a skilled Marketer and Strategist, please let me know

Thank you all so much in advance.

I found my first one the old way via contacts.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Danish passport?

With your profile, best bet is probably with major multinationals — they’ll be more open to getting you an EP, but I don’t expect it will be easy. They typically advertise on the major job portals.

It’s best to use local Singapore address on your resume, even if it’s at a friend’s place, or you else you likely won’t pass initial screening by HR and the hiring manager won’t even know you applied.

Good luck.

I changed a job in Singapore twice, and every time it was through a job offer posted on LinkedIn by the recruiting agency. Try connecting with some headhunters.
Do keep in mind that the marketing sector in Singapore is heavily dominated by the locals

Afraid I can't help either, I was headhunted and poached from a competitor to come here from the US 41 years ago.

My first job (foot in the door) in Singapore was through an internal transfer. The 3 subsequent job changes - I was head hunted and they found me through LinkedIn. For reference, I work in technology in a bank.

Back when I was hired, job listings were in the Saturday edition of Straits Times, classified section. Nowadays everything is online. Just take some random Fortune 100 companies and google “company name” + “Singapore” + “jobs” and you’ll instantly become an expert on where to look.

HR does an initial screening, and they aren’t always the brightest, so don’t assume anything… and possibly be aggressive if you are getting ignored. I would try not to mention your status as a foreigner, and I would not waste time with local SMEs (there are exceptions, but it’s usually a waste of time for non-locals).
