PR Application

Post by JackLee2 » Thu, 10 Aug 2023 9:26 am

Hi,

I am new to SG. I start working since Apr 23 and planning to apply PR in October later.

Age: 42
Gender: Male
Nationality: Malaysian
Race: Chinese
Currently is EP holder.
Salary: ~110k/year
Industry: Oil and Gas
Marital Status : Married with 2 kids (9 years old and 7 years old) - Currently, they are living in Malaysia.

I would like to gather more info, appreciated your valuable opinions:-

1. I intend to bring family and kids to study in SG. Shall I apply PR for myself first or shall I apply PR for whole family? Is the chance to approve difference for individual or for family?

2. Another thing that I worry is kids' education, is MOE going to accept them easily after their PR have been approved? Or we have to wait for MOE allocation if there is any slot?

Thank you and have a nice day!
Jack

1. Apply as a family better. If you apply alone also you will get it likely.

Hi Jack,
First thing you should do is apply for dependant pass for the wife and kids, if you havent done so already, irregardless of whether they're living here or not.

SG will always value a family application at 42 more than an individual application especially if you're already a family unit.
AND if you have BOY/s and you dont apply pr for them the same time as yours.. then you should know what they'll be thinking of you, dun care malaysian chinese or not.
Even if you're successful individually, your wife and kids will still be foreigners on dp which is not beneficial to you as pr or them.

Now comes the complicated part and any parent's rightful worry - the kids' education.

If you want them to start here asap then you have no choice but to apply as foreigners.

refer:
https://www.moe.gov.sg/international-students/admission

as you can see, the kids will have to jump hoops.. if your kids are not currently in the chinese school system in MY, then compulsory mandarin as mother tongue will be tough. esp for the elder kid as PSLE looms.. not to mention SG's world reknown maths curriculum.. and all in english.

From my experience, foreigner MY chinese kids are highly prioritised foreigners for MoE schools placements while it can be almost impossible for other nationalities.

However if you want easier entry at MoE, then the pr for the kids will definitely help. BUT pr application results can take anywhere between 6 months to 2 years or more.. which may bring your elder kid closer to 12 with those 4 letters looming large again.. PSLE.

And i dont think they enroll kids directly to P6/PSLE anyways.

Easiest would be to enroll the kids in International School (that again in itself is a whole different ball game with long waiting lists for the top ones..), whilst you apply and wait for everything else but affordabilty is in question even with your 120k pa.
And your kids will get a culture shock when you yank them from intl school and parachute them into MOE school later.

sorry. my first post trying to help and i'm already rambling...

so
1. get the dp.
2. apply MOE schools and apply pr as family concurrently.
3. most important is look after kids' mental wellbeing.

Let us know how you get on and good luck!

Nice first post. One small comment though. I thought they recently stopped using the PSLE.

PSLE is an institution in itself.. kenot simply anyhow stop wan..
hahaha..
anyways they did decide to do away with quite a few school exams so that the primary kids can be assessed more 'holistically' to include sports and music arts and hence be more well-rounded going into secondary but PSLE stands.
But here being uniquely planet SG, these holistic 'arts and sports' are now being pursued by parents for their kids with the same steely-eyed-never-lose-never-give-up-never-die detrmination as say... the BTO ballot or P1 admissions and the.... PSLE results.
So ideally your kid should be a concert pianist with a minor on the cello, can run 100m in 11secs and have an interest in... cooking while conversing fluently in your mother tongue and at the same time score 1s in PSLE... Phew ! not too much to ask of the kids rite?
hahahaha
welcome to Singapore.

PSLE is still called PSLE. Just that the scoring is now different. Instead of the 200+ T score, it’s been revised to single digits with 4 being the best score (score 1 for each subject) now.

Thanks T.o.E, singaporeflyer, sundaymorningstaple, korosensei and MOCHS for your valuable opinion and suggestions.

"And i dont think they enroll kids directly to P6/PSLE anyways."

This is what i am very worry as well. I did plan to enroll my elder son to SG school first with considering the PR applicatin/approval process may take 1~2 years. I just miss the application date due to the English test results was released one day after the closing date in July 2023. I am going to enroll him for Jan/Feb 2024 later.

I will start the dependant pass application immediately.

Thank you.

You can try convert it to JPEG. It should work.

I'm really not a fan of this new scoring system, I wonder how they would make the choice between the thousands of candidate who score in the same achievement level.

Now, numerous programs have the ability to edit PDF files so I think it's loosing it's luster as they can be edited.
