Chances of applying for citizenship after marriage

Post by meeeeeeel » Thu, 13 Jul 2023 8:56 pm

Hi all,

I’m a long time PR holder, and recently got married to a local last April. That makes it less than two years into the marriage, but would I need to wait for two years to apply? Since im a long time PR pass holder?

Check the eligibility.

You qualify for either 1 or 2. If you want to go for 2 where your citizen spouse sponsors you, then wait for 2 years of marriage. If you want to go through 1 by applying by yourself, then up to you.

You didn’t give us any other stats like your race, nationality, age, occupation, salary, education, your citizen spouse’s race/details, etc, we also can’t gauge your chances. The crystal ball needs more information so it can work.

I’m Indonesian-Chinese, turning 33 next month, and in the financial services line. Salary wise is 100k+ for last two years… i have a Bachelor’s from a US University…my husband is Chinese, and also in the financial services line.

Should i apply on my own, and if rejected, i guess i could reapply with my spouse? Do they consider spouse’s occupation and salary heavily then?

If your spouse sponsors you then of course they look at your spouse’s ability to support you. That’s what being a sponsor means.

Does the number of times getting rejected affect future chances? Just wondering if I get rejected, will it affect my chances if I reapply another time with my spouse? His income is pretty average around 4K

ICA has a record of all applications and the outcome of each application. If rejected, wait 2 years before re-applying. Improve profile in the mean time.

You’re from the favoured race, income is decent enough to support yourself, just apply solo lah. The only concern is why you took so long to apply for citizenship since most people apply for SC after being PR for 3-5 years.

Have a SC baby with your SC hubby and chances go up lor.
