Submersible Titan imploded

Post by abbby » Sat, 24 Jun 2023 8:19 am

Sad ending to the submersible.. But not sure why would anyone dare to sit in it.. Son accompanied the dad for father's day and ended up this way.. Horrific..

For the same reason so many die trying to get to the top of Everest. As noted in a previous post, I've been both a deep sea diver and a helicopter pilot at different period of my life. But you would not catch me trying to climb a mountain. Different strokes for different folks.

I saw a video that calculated the relative cost of the journey to those onboard. A ticket would be the equivalent of 6 sandwiches to the passengers. Why wouldn't they go? Though I believe they could have exercised better judgement.

A missed opportunity... you could have conquered land, air, and sea.

Absolutely agree, mountains and sea are just not for human exploration. Also, not sure why people love to climb Mt Everest..

It seems like there have been some billionaires in the past who have done risk assessment and backed out - cost is just a small part of the equation.

I'm betting that the families of the victims are going to sue the pants off the company.

I don't think they'll have much luck. All the passengers were required to sign extensive waivers releasing ocean gate from any liability. Apparently the word death is mentioned three times on the first page alone.

In the grand scheme of things, I just feel to become a billionaire you already have to take crazy amounts of risks and it is a survivors game. Like Elon Musk, he appears totally stupid most of the time, but as long as luck is with him, he keeps winning and he keeps going higher and higher. But it is just a matter of time, one would run out of luck taking these kind of crazy risks and then their whole world falls apart and then we see for what they truly are. Just brave risk takers who kept winning, until they ran out of luck.

There is a very thin line between bravery and stupidity, depending on which side the coin lands.

The problem with that is that the launching pad between bravery and stupidity is only in an individual's eye/mind. The person beside them might have a different set of parameters. I spent 3 years as a chopper pilot and 50 years as a diver (of which 20 of them were commercial deep sea style in Oil fields world wide. Yeah, I've had a number of close calls in both fields but I've also wrecked several cars and owned over half a dozen motorcycles as well so should we include driving in the stupidity column? Oops! I forgot you used to be a mcycle rider here. I wasn't brave enough to keep my 750 Honda Magna - figured it was on the wrong side of the stupidity line - got rid of it after 6 months and haven't ridden since. I can control a helicopter and I can control most of a dive, but I cannot control all the other idiots out there that managed to secure a driving permit.

Elon seems to have flown too close to the sun this time, are you keeping up with what's happening on Twitter?

You're right about driving, most of the drivers here seem to have gotten their licenses out of a cereal box.
