Where should I live

Post by IGuy » Sat, 24 Jun 2023 4:12 am

Hi!

I am moving to Singapore later this year. I would appreciate some guidance on neighborhoods to live in. I am in my 30s, single with no kids. I'm done with nightclubs and 5am finishes, but still enjoy a few beers somewhere with a bit of energy/life. Handy access to a beach or some semblance of nature would be great. I hate commuting, so a decent link to Shenton Way would be nice. (This is a wish-list. I don't expect anywhere to have it all)

Thanks!!

Where do you hail from. This might be useful for recommendations.

Are you planning on having a car? What's your budget?

If you have the budget, you can have it all, so it really depends on that.
Also Singapore is a small country, so if you aren't able to get all the amenities you want in walking distance, it will likely be only a short train/bus ride away.
I stay in the North and worked in the Central area for years - it's not so bad, esp if you have flexi hours. When I lived and worked in the North, I got pestered all the time, so one can live too near the workplace!

It would also be good to understand what your intentions/expectations are at the beach. Are you just wanting to be a beach bum and catch some rays or are there some other activities, sports or social aspects you seek? For example, windsurfing isn’t available on all beaches, likewise, beach bars aren’t found on all beaches.

When I first moved here, I heard a lot of bad things about the north. But it actually has quite a few plus points, for one it's a little less developed than other areas of the island so it tends to be less crowded which is really nice.

Was thinking the same thing. The experience at Palawan beach is different from that at ECP.

I'm thinking our OP is nothing but a limey troll. Posting from a GB ISP (we been getting a lot of them in the past couple of years along with a host down in Austin TX and another in CA.) He made the initial post. I checked the IP as usual and saw that so asked the innocuous question as to where he's coming from to get a handle of what he might be looking for. He made the single post on Sat Afternoon and nothing since. I don't think I'd waste me time here.

I was on the edge of civilisation 25 yrs ago. There was even remnant of a kampung. But it's all built up now.

I lived at the end of Jln Kayu on the North side of the island for 15 years in an old 2 story Black & White in Seletar Airbase (within walking distance of the waters separating Sg & Msia). Very ulu back in those days. Only moved out when UDMC gave up management of the management and it was tendered to Pidemco (Later called Premas Int'l after they won the management lease). after having my rent go up by 300% over a 30 month period I called it quits as I figured if I had to pay that much I'd rather have a wee something to show for it so I bought the flat I'm still living in 24 years later but paid it off 10 years ago. If I could have rented out the flat for enough to cover the rent of the B&W I'd still be there.

I'm still on the North Side of the Island & have spent the last 40 of my 41 years here in the North.

I took my daughter to SSDC in Woodlands at least once a week early last year and I'd say while it looks different than it was 20 years ago, it's still far less developed than the rest of SG. I mean that in a good way, though.

And if you sell it someday, it'll be worth a hell of a lot more than what you got it for

I was referring to residential areas. The industrial park is still pretty much the same, though it's gradually changing too.

I figured, but even the commercial areas, like Causeway point are far more open and spread out than anything you would see in other areas of singapore. Very refreshing change.
