Titanic submarine missing

Post by Lisafuller » Thu, 22 Jun 2023 11:44 pm

Are any of you following the story of the ocean gate sub that got lost on expedition? They're supposed to be running out of oxygen soon. What do you think are the odds that they come back alive, or are located at all?

Seems the worst has happened. What a terrible end for those 5 men. The sea is a cruel mistress.

Just read about it... tragic. What's most sad to me was that the 19 year old was terrified of going but went to please his father as the trip fell over Fathers Day weekend.

Very unfortunate, especially knowing that the tragedy was avoidable if better safety control measures were in place.

Worse still is that apparently the US Govt knows exactly when it Imploded but sat on it due to the necessity of not divulging military secrets as to it's listening capabilities. I'm sure more will come out of this later.

I agree. Did you see the interior of the vessel? Military subs with far more hardware and software in them are only permitted to go to a fraction of the depth the titan did. The titan, on the other hand, was operated by a $15 logitech controller and had one button on board.

Apparently, it imploded three days ago. I can understand from a national security perspective why it might be important to limit public knowledge of domestic military capabilities, but I can also see how there was tons of unnecessary speculation and worry caused by withholding that information. Although, if I'm being completely honest, I don't see how the information is relevant to anybody but the families of the victims.

There is a very good possibility that the family knew early on in the week but the media, for the obvious reasons, weren't told, (those vultures couldn't keep a secret if their lives depended on it) but I doubt it. What nobody is seeing is the elephant in the middle of the room. They still couldn't confirm that the noise that was recorded was from the submersible or not, until the wreckage/debris field was located. I used to be a deep sea diver till I retired in 1988 so have some idea of what was happening. I also have done enough body snatching jobs in the Gulf of Mexico as well from helicopters, airplanes, boats, cars & drilling rigs that collapsed during hurricanes in reasonably shallow waters (down to around 300 ft depth) not the 12,500 ft the titanic is lying at. There isn't any light down there and difficult to locate something that you don't know where it is.

Oh, the listening capabilities are of utmost importance to the military. The can identify ships & submarines by size, class, country just from it catalog of sounds underwater, from many, many miles away by the noises they generate while underway. (Much in the same way as whales do across hundreds of miles of ocean). I personally have over 50 years of SCUBA experience and 2 decades of commercial deep sea diving experience. In fact, that's how I ended up in Singapore in 1982 when I was poached from my former diving company to go to work for Oceaneering International based here in Singapore but covering all of SE Asia.

You've lived 100 lives, SMS.

And yes, the media is full of unsympathetic, unfeeling vultures. My heart goes out to the families of the victims.

Did you hear about the refugee ship that sunk?

Yeah I did, and while it's the shits that it didn't get the same coverage, maybe it was a hidden blessing re: bad crap is portrayed in the media for whatever mileage/eyeball hits it can gather. As you noted, they are an unsympathetic bunch. The last thing grieving families need is having everybody they have ever known calling them up during the trying times surrounding great catastrophes especially while ongoing.

Had to laugh at your 100 lives comment. I actually could have retired years ago had somebody given me $10 for ever time I've hear something in that vein or that I should write a book. I've damned sure used up more than the cat's allocated lives. But I can say one thing. At least when I go, I go with an empty bucket list (unless I can think of something else!!!). Everything I've ever wanted to try, I did. Some I've enjoyed, some not, those things I've not tried, I have no interest in. My father gave me that advice when I was still a pupper long before it became a meme. "YOLO" I've lived my whole life that way. Not rich, monetarily, but in life experiences, memories abound.

That's the way to do it. A lot of luck involved too, not everybody makes it to that age with that many stories to tell.

There were a lot of people online saying that the mass tragedy was overshadowed by the implosion, because the media and members of the public value the lives of billionaires more than that of nameless, faceless refugees. But I simply don't think that's the case. The submarine was such a big deal because of the circumstances involved, and the irony of history repeating itself.

It has a lot to do with who was on board. Billionaires vs nameless faceless economic refugees.

I just find it is a bit unreal. Billionaires with so much money and yet got killed in such a freak way.

I mean if I had a billion dollars, my primary aim would be to live as long as possible, like Golum from lord of the rings, lol. The last thing I would do is take any kind of risk that would kill me.
