PR Rejected - Appeal Chances

Post by pacoeta » Sat, 27 May 2023 3:10 am

Hi there Singapore Expats Forum! I've been a long-time lurker here in the forum ever since I started my PR application and have really enjoyed the community that has been built here.

A bit of background about myself:

Nationality: Malaysian
Gender: Male
Race: Chinese
Age: 26
Job Title: Product Manager in a tech startup
Salary: 120K
Pass: EP since Nov 2021 > applied for PR in Aug 2022 > received outcome today for the rejection

I'm wondering if there's any reason for me to appeal the outcome. The only thing that comes to mind is that I have a biological older sister (same mum) who is a PR and EP has been renewed during the interval. Appreciate any thoughts/advice that comes.

Thank you

Never state:
- Marital status
- How long you’ve been in SG, did you study here at all?
- Criminal records, if any
- Apply by yourself or used an agency. If you used agency, don’t be surprised by rejection.

Hey MOCHS, thanks for responding - apologies for not sharing these earlier:

Marital status: Single
Education: Studied in Malaysia up until university (bachelor in business from UK uni), have not studied in Singapore at all
Period of Stay: Since Nov 2021, under EP
Tax cycle: 1 cycle for 2023
Time of Application: Aug 2022; without agency

Criminal records: There is one fine ($100) imposed by Immigration Office during my quarantine period as HR mistakenly thought I can only initiate EP procedures after the 10-day quarantine but turns out, this needed to be initiated right away on the day of arrival. This has been paid by the company and EP has also been renewed since then.

Hope this is helpful in providing more context (to the wider community as well) and let me know if there any other info that would be helpful.

Should have still waiting until the generally accepted minimum period of residency here (EP) is 24 months in duration. While he meets all the other criteria there have been a number of M'sian Chinese who have tried to jump the gun on the working duration here over the past three years and have been rejected. I doubt the immigration fine would have had any real bearing on it as it was actually the employer's fault which is why they paid the fine.

I think the general understanding is PR application is considerably easier for Malaysian Chinese, as long as you show willingness to sink roots.

Did you provide any info of your sis in your original application?

Hey sundaymorningstaple - big fan of your contributions to the forum here

Do agree with you that the immigration fine likely have no impact given that the EP has been renewed successfully since then.

In your opinion, what would be the wisest next step for me, if the objective is to still get the PR and settle in Singapore for the good run? Appreciate your thoughts on this 🙏🏻

Hey Dracc, thanks for responding - that was my thought initially as well.

So the application itself seems to only ask for further information if your sibling is a Singapore Citizen (I.e. IC number) but no option to declare sibling’s permanent residence so I wasn’t really able to declare this information during the application itself. All I was able to do was state I have a sister and her name but nothing else that would indicate her PR status

Do you reckon that I will be able to appeal with this information that wasn’t included in the original application? Appreciate your thoughts in this, many thanks in advance

As long as you have told ICA about your sis, and you are just trying to give more facts to convince them. I see no harm in highlighting this info in your appeal. All the best!

if the form never ask whether your sibling is PR. Its mean they are not interested.

Just wait, improve profile, and re-apply after EP renewed.

Yes, M’sian Chinese tend to have easier time with getting PR but it is not 100% guaranteed you will get on first try. You jumped the gun too soon. Appeals don’t work so don’t waste your time.

Appeals are very rarely successful, unless there was a mistake in the information submitted.

This is correct. They are believed to have the easiest time integrating into the local population due to cultural similarities.

Best option is to wait and reapply.
