Chance of Singapore Citizenship

Hi,

About me:
Singapore PR since 2008
Husband and first son - Singapore Citizens - from 2010
We moved to US in 2014
Our Second son born in US and he is a US citizen
We are planning to move back in 5 years time, so I applied for SG citizenship through my husband (sponsor) on Mar,2022. Still the status is Pending.

Both working here in US, and we have a HDB flat in SG which is currently rented.
What is the chance of getting the citizenship approved?

Why would you apply for citizenship if you know that you're moving back?

What's your nationality, and did your spouse apply for SC for second son?

I reckon they will take one look at it as deny it as it appears that you are only doing to to keep a bolt hole open if the US turns to crap. Even now, why should they give out SGC to someone who is a PR basing it on a SGC who hasn't lived in the country for 9+ years as well still not planning on coming back for another 5 years. Good Luck, but I feel you are going to need a lot more than a pinch of salt to pull this one off. Is your REP still valid?

I don't think that the chances are totally bust as they do have a home here, and half of the family has citizenship.

I think it could go either way.

If you do not apply for citizenship for your second son, I believe your chances of success are close to zero. It would come across as you wanting to enjoy the benefits of citizenship without sacrificing anything, in this case in the form of your son's service.

That being said, it's also not entirely clear why you would need citizenship. Considering the fact that you're a PR, you're able to live here enjoying almost all the benefits that come with being a citizen. This might actually be ideal as you get to retain your home citizenship.

Thank you all for your comments. More info about our family. We are Indians, and we have lot of relatives, my parents, my in-laws, my brother's family all in Singapore. Initially it was just for short time because of my husband work but it is getting extended. I have extended my PR 2 times after coming overseas, and we usually visit once every 2 years for 5 weeks.
Since my second son is born here, and US citizen by birth we are maintaining his status for now since it is difficult to get US citizenship and let him decide for himself when he is older. But definitely when my first son is about to enter NS we want to come back to SG for good which is in 4 years' time, and during pandemic we found it very difficult to travel with 3 different passports and following the regulations for each country that's why I decided to apply for Singapore Citizenship for myself last year. Hoping for the best. Thank you all for your time.

As mentioned by others, chances of SC for you are fairly low. However, even if you cannot keep extending your REP, you should be able to come back to Singapore as spouse of SC (on LTVP). If your HDB is jointly owned (vs you as an essential occupier) and in the event that your REP is lost (if you need to renew again before you guys intend to return), you need to make sure you can still comply with HDB's ownership rules (I think you should be OK but I don't know logistically what happens if one SPR moves to foreigner status).

Since my second son is born here, and US citizen by birth we are maintaining his status for now since it is difficult to get US citizenship and let him decide for himself when he is older.

He can still keep US passport til 21 then decide:

If this is to avoid NS obligations, I'm sure you know that isn't a good idea, and may affect your own application.

HDB will 'review' it. When I signed my lease many years ago, they made a point of telling me that if I ever was sole owner or my status changed (I was then PR), I'd have to give up the flat. Since then I've heard mixed stories. Basically, I wouldn't test them on it, because they do have the right to boot you out.

Understand. I think they will be OK based on a) SC Husband and first SC son and/or b) SC Husband and Non-Residents. Just not sure what needs to be done if title needs to change, etc.

The real question here is what you plan to do about your second son. If you don't apply for citizenship or at least PR for him, you'll be looking real bad.
