Evaluate my PR chance after losing job

Post by humblefool » Fri, 19 May 2023 9:48 am

I’m 34 year old Indian Male, residing in Singapore since 2017 (so roughly 6 years). I finished a PhD in machine learning/AI from NUS in 2022 and since then have been working at a tech mnc as an AI scientist (yes that’s the designation). My monthly salary for last 1 year at this company has been around 15800 sgd per month (including bonus).

Recently, I lost my job and subsequently it proved to be quite hard to secure a similar industry position in Singapore. But I received a post doc or research fellow offer at NUS, with a salary of 6200 (base) + 1200 (hra) per month. One of the reasons for not being able to get an industry job now seems to be very few tech companies are sponsoring work pass. Note that during my PhD I also worked as a research intern for 8 months (with a spass and paid some tax) at a self driving car company in Singapore.

Hence, I plan to apply for PR, what are my chances of getting it given this profile?

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

I understand the salary is low, but this is really a stopgap solution. I am actively searching for industry position while I work as post doc at NUS. Also note that, this is one of the highest, if not the highest, post doc salary you can get in Singapore. Academia salary tend to be much lower than industry. Do you think this (that academia salary is much lower) is taken into account by ica?

what we think is not important. We will not know what ICA will take into account.

If you want to give a shot, just go ahead.

ICA looks at many factors, not just salary & industry alone. Age, marital status, kids, etc…

You apply PR after at least 6 months in your new job. You don’t mix payslips from the old job because that is not your current occupation lol.
