Ex-PR Likelihood of getting EP?

Post by beanie21 » Wed, 19 Apr 2023 8:13 pm

Hi just hoping to get a bit of advice:

I'm an Australian, ex PR, grew up in Singapore from 7 to 15 before I renounced my PR and moved back to Australia. My mom is Singaporean and still lives there. I had actually enlisted to NS and gone through the fitness tests, and even flown in regularly every 3 months to make sure I wouldn't get in trouble with the authorities. I had applied for the early-entry scheme as we graduate from high school in Australia at 17. However, due to unknown reasons, I was not granted early entry, spent over 8 months waiting for NS to let me know my enlistment date. I then decided to stop waiting, renounced my PR via appropriate channels and went back to Australia for university. I can go to Singapore for social visits.

As luck would have it, I am dating a Singaporean and would eventually like to settle down in Singapore. What are my chances of getting an EP and being able to work in Singapore? I work in healthcare and am open to possibly doing NS if required. Does being married to a Singaporean have any influence on possibility of getting a EP?

Thank you, any advice would be greatly appreciated as my gf is adamant on staying in SG :o :) :D

How old are you now? That is probably going to be the only saving grace if you didn't do NS. If you are considered too old by MINDEF/CMPB then the likelihood of even gaining an EP might be iffy. But regaining PR may be a bit out of reach. But if your age is still in your early to mid 20's I think your age when you left, the detailed information on your attempts, etc. might be good to document and get certified/notarized if at all possible could possibly be of help. That and the willingness to do NS if it comes to that (they need to know that as well). Let us know how you go......

Hi! Thanks for all the advice, very helpful considerations. I'm just about to be in my 30s - unfortunately growing up also involved a career change.
Regarding willingness to serve NS, where exactly in the application process will I be able to address this?

A trip here if you renunciation was all okay, shouldn't be any issue. CMPB will generally not entertain any form of communication other than walk-in presentation of self (I'm sure you can see their wisdom in that). So a trip here soonest and a trip to CMPB with documentation, etc. and just go with your hat in your hand and try to present you case to them. If they are okay with it they should be able to give you documentary evidence of their decision. After that include that with your application documents. I think that would be the place to start as no matter what else ICA, MOM or the PM thinks, it's still up to Mindef/CMBP to give the greenlight for consideration. Keep us posted.

No. Being married to a Local is only valuable when applying for PR or SGC. EP is purely employer based and is issued by the MOM. PR & SGC under ICA, add .gov.sg to either of the acronyms and it will take you to their sites.

Hi again, thanks for the reply. Yes, a trip to CMPB makes sense - will start with them and see how it goes.

I've been looking around on this website and have found someone in a similar situation as myself whom married a SC and managed to get LTVP+. If I went down this route as well, would LTVP allow me to work in Singapore by default since I only need a LOC? ie. I would not need a employment pass as well? Or also need CMPB approval?

You can work on the LTVP+ as the LOC doesn't need an employment pass to support it, but how long it would continue to be approved is anybody's guess. Honestly, there I don't have a clue.
