Book depository closing down

Post by abbby » Fri, 07 Apr 2023 4:32 pm

It's my favourite online platform to get books and usually cheaper than those sold in Singapore. Shipping may take a few weeks, but well worth it. really sad to see it close. Surprised.

Does anyone borrow ebooks from NLB using Libby? I borrow ebooks from both US & SG libraries. Despite many things in SG being scarce, it’s not the case in this instance.

The breadth and depth of selection, and the availability of ebooks for borrowing at the NLB is many-fold better than US libraries. The audio book and eMagazine selection is amazing too!

The only downside is that unlike US libraries, NLB resources can’t be downloaded to a Kindle Paperwhite… hopefully that will change eventually. Maybe we need to petition the NLB?

Big Ask to get NLB ebooks onto a paper white kindle - I don’t think Amazon owns the copyright to sell ebooks in Singapore and hence does not have a kindle store or sell Kindle devices from Amazon.sg.

I borrow a lot of ebooks from NLB using Libby. From the NLB mobile app, you can get 1 hour/day free access to Press Reader. So you can read FT/Washington Post etc for free very easily. There is an annual fee ($43.20) for NLB membership if you are neither Singaporean or PR but highly worth it for the range available.

I'm a constant Libby user with the NLB app too. Love it as it has saved me an absolute fortune over the years. When I see a book at Kino that I'm tempted to buy, I look for it on the NLB app first and very often it is there.

Not really a fair comparison, I don't think. Kind of like apples & oranges. It's the National Library of Singapore. Therefore maybe you should compare it to the Library of Congress (the US National Library). Not the local library in your home town. :-k

But for it small size It does have a decently stocked library, I'd have to say.

Fortunately my local library in the US is part of the Midwest Collaborative, which combines resources of several dozen libraries across the region. Certainly not the library of congress, but better than one home town library. The biggest problem in the US is the number of people borrowing books is far greater than here - anything good has been checked out and you’ve got a long waitlist.

One hack, for those who may not know - once you borrow a book and download it on a Kindle Paperwhite, if you put the device in airplane mode before the book comes due, you can extend your access to that book indefinitely, without penalty, for as long as you stay in airplane mode.

I think mine is still in airplane mode right now because I hadn’t finished the Rockefeller book Titan… it’s a really good read. Anytime I go past a Caltex or Esso station here, I see his legacy (for better or worse) continuing to this day.

Seems there are other alternatives to BD. Have not tried them yet though.

I’m aware of that hack, but couldn’t find a way to do it efficiently - I’m far too lazy to be bothered… I’ll just do without, or cringe and read the juicy bits on a backlit screen (yuck).
