It amazes me how brands like Aunt Jemima can get wiped off the face of the planet, despite not offending anyone… just because some bright spark (usually a white liberal, sorry to say) thinks people should be offended.
In Singapore, most people know Darlie toothpaste… and, if you’ve been here long enough, know it was originally branded as Darkie. Will it face the same fate?

What! I never knew that. Though it does make sense, a good toothpaste should be able to whiten even the darkest teeth.

Although I wasn’t here when they sold Darkie toothpaste, I’ve had enough conversations with locals over the past 27 years… the topic came up on at least one occasion.
What surprised me in the article is how popular it was in China, I always thought it was a Singapore brand that was only sold around these parts.

I've seen it in many SEAn countries... given as free travel toothpaste in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam.

It was still Darkie when I got here. a couple of years later it was changed to Darlie. The face was also changed to a shadow face instead of the minstrel face originally used. Most here don't even know what a minstrel was. Probably instigated by a leading edge 'woke' white liberal piece of sh*t.

I remember Darkie from my childhood days, Gran would get it from Hong Kong. When I got here, my bro and I also commented that it had changed a bit…
In Cornwall, UK, they also had an annual Darkie Day festival - local village would go Blackface to commemorate the passing of a slave ship. My black colleague in the US was laughing her ass off at ‘us crazy Brits’

Had to google what a minstrel was. I know it as blackfacing.

I went to quite a few minstrel shows back in the day when I was still in high school. In fact, The Elks Club used to have a big deal out of their production in my hometown. (this was before integration. I was in the last segregated class to graduate from my high school.

Somehow I don't think Darlie will have any issues in China.

I remember when that blew up over here. In fact, if we search the archives here around 2016 or 17 I believe there was a thread on it as well.

I wonder who approved this ad, and what the person who pitched it was thinking.

I think in countries that have more homogenous populations like Japan, Korea, and China, there aren't very strong feelings about racism.

Wow, most times I think of segregation and widespread racism as a thing of the distant, distant past, but this makes me realize that it really wasn't too long ago.
