if your citizenship application is approved and you are under 21 year old, ICA will not require you to renounce your Indian citizenship, you can keep it until 21 year old. Once you reach your 21 year old birthday, you will receive letter from ICA asking you to renounce Indian citizenship. In my opinion, just complete your SGC first and there is no harm to keep Indian citizenship. Once you reach 21 year old you have 1 year, which is a lot of time, to do the renunciation.
Agreed, moreover, a lot of things can change in a couple years, it's best to have as many options as possible.

I am a 16 year old who is at the final stage of citizenship application. While i understand that minors can maintain dual nationality in Singapore till 21, my country of citizenship(india) does not allow dual citizenship. Should I just renounce citizenship after registration or wait for the letter asking to take ORAL. For context, I applied under students scheme so I am a independent applicant, ie no sponsor

Hi and congrats. Just curious, when did you come to Singapore and how/when did you obtain PR (student scheme or is your family also PR but only you want to pursue SC)?
Hello so i was born to employment pass holders in singapore so i was on dependent pass.

a year later my parents applied for PR as a family unit and it was approved.

After 7 years of being PR we submitted a citizenship application as family unit but it got rejected. We tried one more time and it was also rejected.

When i turned 15 and was eligible for Singpass, I found out that you can apply for citizenship if you are a PR and have passed at least one national exam. So I applied in late october for citizenship and got my IPA letter in February.

Thanks for the reply and congrats again. Interesting that the timeline was so quick; previously some of the students could get PR approved in a month or so, but I wasn't sure about SC.

No i don’t have to take the ORAL cos i am under 21 and am legally allowed to maintain dual citizenship status till the age of 21

Honestly, I wouldn't complicate things. I feel like this is the kind of situation where you cross that bridge when you get to it. If you renounce your Indian citizenship without having first taken the oath, solidifying your status as a citizen, you may risk becoming stateless.
Exactly. He does not need to risk himself while ICA does not require him to do so. No harm to keep Indian citizenship.

Yup, the way I see it, it's never a good thing to put all your eggs in one basket. One might also say that this is the same reason the ICA forces you to choose, so that you'll have to commit to Singapore as your basket.

I'm not surprised honestly, the ICA seems to love the youth.

Good, if you intend to take up citizenship, I think just wait until you absolutely have to make a decision.

Hi @ThrinayanS

Thanks for sharing your Citizenship journey. Similar to yours my daughter has also received the IPA for citizenship last week.

As like you she is also under 21 yrs, hence she doesnt need to do SG Citizenship journey.
She has an appt with ICA next month for Citizenship registration.
She also doesnt need to do renounciation of existing citizenship.

Can you pls advise steps you had post IPA, and what is the ICA appt for Citizenshp registration?

Regds

Hi Thrinayan,

I checked with Indian Embassy and apparently minors are not allowed to hold 2 passports. Hence required to renounce Indian citizenship.
May I check if you did renounce before receiving Singapore citizenship?

OP mentioned she did not renounce. That's what this entire thread is about.

1) On the day that you have to report to the ICA building is when you officially become a Singaporean. If you intend to travel with foreign passport till you acquire a Singapore passport you may apply for a ROE endorsement at the building itself after registration.

2) After registration, blue IC will be invalid so you will get a slip to collect your IC. You can book to collect your IC a day later on the website itself.

3) After 3-6 months of registration you will receive an email to attend citizenship ceremony. This is where you will receive your citizenship certificate.

Yes that is true but i haven’t applied for a Singapore passport yet. Only once you apply for a foreign passport you are supposed to renounce your Indian citizenship. Till then, you can use your Indian passport for travel
