Don't think anybody was trying to be xenophobic...malcontent wrote: ↑Thu, 06 Apr 2023 1:55 pmWith less than half of the population being Singapore-born Singaporeans, it’s time to turn the corner and be more welcoming of anyone living here and contributing to the Singapore story. No more dividing people into stayers and quitters… there are only contributors. The trend toward this insular, entitled, xenophobic culture needs to stop, or else everything that is special here will fade away and glory of the past will be just that.
I was speaking about Singapore remaining open and dynamic. Xenophobic means having or showing a dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries — that happens here more than it should.Lisafuller wrote: ↑Sun, 23 Apr 2023 11:38 pmDon't think anybody was trying to be xenophobic...malcontent wrote: ↑Thu, 06 Apr 2023 1:55 pmWith less than half of the population being Singapore-born Singaporeans, it’s time to turn the corner and be more welcoming of anyone living here and contributing to the Singapore story. Saw this on reddit, and someone linked the court case transcript. This article seems to be just quoting the defense statement and not the whole case.tiktok wrote: ↑Sun, 23 Apr 2023 8:39 pmThis story is absent from Straits Times and CNA (correct me if I'm wrong). I guess the government thinks it's best that that people don't know about it.

True, we need to be less judgmental people of who come from overseas, many of us were once in their position.malcontent wrote: ↑Mon, 24 Apr 2023 12:50 amI was speaking about Singapore remaining open and dynamic. Sure, don't deal drugs, but humanity has discovered better forms of punishment than execution. It's completely out of proportion for a drug that's now legal in many countries. I suspect that's why the government has instructed the press not to report on it.jalanjalan wrote: ↑Mon, 24 Apr 2023 12:52 pmSaw this on reddit, and someone linked the court case transcript. The law in Singapore has never been a secret, and the message has always been clear - don't deal drugs.
It's in CNA and ST today. Sorry, disagree with you that pot is no big deal. Heard all the arguments about that and they fail to convince me. Happy healthy people don't numb their brains with drugs. I'd rather focus on keeping people happy and healthy.tiktok wrote: ↑Tue, 25 Apr 2023 1:05 pmSure, don't deal drugs, but humanity has discovered better forms of punishment than execution. So, bad if they report it and bad if they don't?tiktok wrote: ↑Tue, 25 Apr 2023 4:20 pmYou mean this? https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/ ... ations-mha
Basically full of government opinion and Richard Branson has no credibility. Funny how they wait for the rest of the world to report it before coming up with this great piece of journalism. See how much you can actually learn about what Branson wrote from that article, then compare to how much space is given to government quotes.
"Pot" is not addictive, is less harmful than alcohol, and has other uses than numbing brains. It appears quite effective at treating some forms of cancer for example. https://www.cancer.org/treatment/treatm ... ancer.html
As for numbing brains, most Singaporeans already do that by spending most of their waking lives staring at phones. And they don't seem too happy either.
re. phone habits - Source?tiktok wrote: ↑Tue, 25 Apr 2023 5:08 pmLook, I know Singaporeans trust the government, but you really have to look further afield for the truth. Of course the Central Narcotics Bureau is not going to tell you anything positive about pot.
Phone habits do a lot more damage to Singaporeans' mental and physical health than cannabis ever will.
As an American, I'm inclined to agree with you. On the other hand though, this hard approach is what has worked for SG so you can see why they're not in a rush to change it.tiktok wrote: ↑Tue, 25 Apr 2023 1:05 pmSure, don't deal drugs, but humanity has discovered better forms of punishment than execution.
