Lisa, I believe you are spot on there. Women "normally" aren't perceived as a threat or a potential flash point. But again I think that is where you are and the time of day, etc. etc.
Plus promoters have to be wary with approaching a couple and dare to approach the male first. Makes good sense to approach the other female first.

Regarding male/female bias, one interesting experiment I’ve tried in recent years when I speak about female vlogger I follow or a female friend of mine back in the US, I will omit the gender just to see what happens. Without fail people consistently assume it’s a male I am speaking about. I find it strange, but to be fair, I am probably guilty of doing the same thing.

My ang moh husband has been stopped by other Asians in SG asking for directions. Which is a bit strange they aren’t approaching the locals but luckily he is already familiar with public transport.

If I’m with him in SG, it’s a 50-50 chance of promoters approaching either him or me. He does look much younger than his age so maybe they assume he’s friendly…?

I used to frequent Jurong Point and insurance promoters would consistently give me a miss and only go after people who appeared to be locals… which I could not be happier about.

However, on the odd occasion when I did take an interest in what a promoter was hawking, they were always friendly and polite.

I’ve been stopped and asked many times by Asian tourists for help.

One interesting twist, when I was walking around in Osaka a middle aged female approached me and asked if I needed any help with directions or anything. I was actually warned by this Japanese lady in our office that these types of ladies exist in Osaka and might approach me… sure enough!

I would think these are rather different categories. I was asked for directions many times. I do not look that young.
With promoters, I always do my best to discourage them and reached here some level of excellency so hard to tell. If I allow eye contact and slow down, I would likely be approached.

Funny enough it was in Jurong Point, the Liberty Market (not existing now for more than 2 decades) I was most frequently approached to enroll to NTUC (don't remember now, insurance or something different).

Ah yes, I remember Liberty Market in the basement (currently occupied by NTUC). It was a valiant attempt to introduce more American groceries here. I think it proved that locals stick to brands they are familiar with, even when better options are offered. I remember buying (in bulk) cans of Chef Boyardee Beef Ravioli there - that was pre-mad cow scare… Singapore forgot to remove the ban which is still in place today (except for whole meat, like steaks). Back then you could get good quality beef franks imported from the US. Probably never see those again.

I’ve currently got 12 cans of Beef Ravioli, 6 cans of Beef Stew and 4 cans of Beef Tamales sitting in my pantry, all brought over in my luggage at various times. It’s just added variety and convenient sometimes.

Back to the cannabis discussion, and Singapore's barbaric outdated laws, here are some studies showing the effectiveness of CBD (a cannabis derivative that will get you hanged here) at inhibiting COVID and other viral infections.

^ Key in anything into Pubmed and you can find results going both directions. You can easily cherry pick articles to make things go in your favour if you don’t scroll through the rest.

Not all published articles have equal weightage either. You can publish in a small journal because you got rejected by others or a big one like Nature which has higher impact factor.

You're absolutely right, but these are interesting studies nonetheless. I hope more research is done.

Studies showing that CBD is harmful are welcome.

Consideration whether THC is medically useful is a bit superficial. Morphine (and number of other) is proven to be medically useful and it is still on the list. I believe this is rather about the whole landscape, how allowing this or that so called recreational drug (alcohol is also one of them) would impact Singapore society.

The most used words in almost all of those articles is "may", "could", "potentially", and so forth. Very little "Can" standing alone.
