Any good? I'd think all this was a sign to quit, but I know it's easier said than done.
The first one seems smart in theory, but will be quite odd in practice. A couple decades from now, the legal age to buy cigarettes would be 65 or 70, which just seems 1. Odd, and 2. Ineffective as most current smokers would never have to quit.malcontent wrote: ↑Sat, 19 Aug 2023 2:28 pmHere is some legislation that could be interesting:
1. The legal age to buy cigarettes to be increased by 1 each year, so in 2024 it’d be 19, and 2025 it’s 20, and so on… such that anyone aged 17 this year would never be able to legally purchase them.
2. The legal quantity of nicotine to be reduced each year until the nicotine content eventually becomes zero and would be an illegal substance from that point onwards.
Sound good?
There are actually nicotine free cigarettes, called herbal cigarettes, I believe. Some are just filled with lavender/other herbs. They're used by people who are trying to quit smoking, and people who believe that there are calming benefits.malcontent wrote: ↑Sun, 20 Aug 2023 9:12 amYes, I was surprised to read about that… it’s an idea that had come to me many moons ago, but I never thought I’d see any country implement it in my lifetime. Not sure why we don’t see other countries following suit.
The idea of nicotine free cigs is an idea I came up with even before that. Unlike caffeine free drinks, I don’t believe there are nicotine free cigs… and the companies that make them know such a thing would be useless for getting people hooked - which is all they want to see. Get rid of the nicotine, get rid of the addiction… anyone can enjoy a toke, without fear (anyone that doesn’t fear the addiction, should).
I was thinking the real thing - tobacco, except nicotine removed… like caffeine free coffee, because people still want the bean without the caffeine… and yes, that did rhymeLisafuller wrote: ↑Sun, 20 Aug 2023 12:31 pmThere are actually nicotine free cigarettes, called herbal cigarettes, I believe. You’re probably alive today because you quit.sundaymorningstaple wrote: ↑Sun, 20 Aug 2023 6:46 pmI solved the problem on December 14, 2004. Had been up 36 straight working on a database program at home. Finally did a test run and while it was running I sat back and light up ANOTHER Marlboro Light. Then as per habit two or three drags later I stubbed it out and looked at the big crystal ashtray sitting beside the Computer that was piled about 4 inches high in a 6 inch wide ashtray and then and there I decided to quit. I crumbled up half a pack of ciggies and said enough is enough. The end of next year will be 20 years without one and I never had withdrawal symptoms although I'd been a hardcore smoker since I was 21. 36 years (starting with the first 10 years with a pipe that I inhaled, cigars and eventually cigarettes' (at one point a 3 pack a day habit).

Good on you for quitting, though it's amazing that this habit never caught up to you healthwise. Most who smoke for only a fraction of the time you did aren't so lucky.sundaymorningstaple wrote: ↑Sun, 20 Aug 2023 6:46 pmI solved the problem on December 14, 2004. Most people don't have the mental strength to quit when it counts, it takes a serious health scare to convince them, and by then, it's usually too late.malcontent wrote: ↑Sun, 20 Aug 2023 10:48 pmYou’re probably alive today because you quit.sundaymorningstaple wrote: ↑Sun, 20 Aug 2023 6:46 pmI solved the problem on December 14, 2004. Yes, it’s much more psychological than physical, but make no mistake — it’s ranked up there with heroin in terms of addiction level, and possibly made worse because without the physical withdrawals there’s fewer disincentives to go back.
Commercial cigarettes have a chemical in the paper that keeps them burning evenly, and I suspect that chemical is a bigger cancer causer than the tobacco. My grandfather rolled his own since high school until he died, at near 80 years old (it was emphysema that finally got him). The papers for rolling your own don’t have that chemical and is why they often have to be relit.Lisafuller wrote: ↑Mon, 21 Aug 2023 11:03 amYou're a poet, and you didn't even know itmalcontent wrote: ↑Sun, 20 Aug 2023 4:23 pmI was thinking the real thing - tobacco, except nicotine removed… like caffeine free coffee, because people still want the bean without the caffeine… and yes, that did rhymeLisafuller wrote: ↑Sun, 20 Aug 2023 12:31 pm

I felt like herbal cigarettes aren't all that bad, even though you should never be smoking anything because it's just poisoning your lungs.
I read that in addition to the addictive chemicals in cigarettes, part of the reason why smokers find smoking calming is because the deep inhales help to regulate their breathing, relaxing them. Herbal cigarettes would allow smokers to achieve the same feeling of steadiness, without all the harm.
You may very well be right, though I wouldn't know. Any reason people don't roll their cigarettes anymore other than convenience? I know most pot smokers still roll their own joints.malcontent wrote: ↑Mon, 21 Aug 2023 1:16 pmCommercial cigarettes have a chemical in the paper that keeps them burning evenly, and I suspect that chemical is a bigger cancer causer than the tobacco. Funny enough, my grandfather was approached in the bar (this had to be more than 30 years ago) when someone thought he was smoking a joint and asked if they could have a hit… his reply was eloquent — “this ain’t no wacky tabacky”Lisafuller wrote: ↑Mon, 21 Aug 2023 2:27 pmYou may very well be right, though I wouldn't know. LOL, what was it then? I remember going to Thailand and seeing weed on every street corner. Not just that, before I'd see it, I'd smell it from a mile away.malcontent wrote: ↑Mon, 21 Aug 2023 3:10 pmFunny enough, my grandfather was approached in the bar (this had to be more than 30 years ago) when someone thought he was smoking a joint and asked if they could have a hit… his reply was eloquent — “this ain’t no wacky tabacky”Lisafuller wrote: ↑Mon, 21 Aug 2023 2:27 pmYou may very well be right, though I wouldn't know.
