work remotely in Singapore

Post by ahz327 » Fri, 10 Feb 2023 11:26 am

Hello
I am Australian citizen and was granted Singapore Dependant's pass recently. I am interested in finding out if I am allowed to work in Singapore while I visit my partner by holding either tourist visa or Dependant's Pass. I am planning to visit my partner from time to time, but would like to continue working for Australian company while I reside in Singapore. I pay full tax to Australian Government.
thanks
Hong

This has been asked & answered many times.

It is generally allowed if it’s not taking a job from a local here… but your assumption about where you’d pay tax might not be correct… and that might actually be to your benefit.

Hypothetically you could get your salary paid into your Australian bank account and the SG government would know nothing about it. Hypothetically of course.

Don't know how Aus tax works, but can't you declare non-residency and not pay tax there?

For the umpteenth time....

If your perform work in Singapore regardless if for a foreign business not located nor doing business in Singapore nor having clients in Singapore, you are deemed to be working in Singapore regardless of the pass you are on. Doesn't matter where you received the income or in what currency. The IRAS says you pay taxes here if you perform work here regardless if via computer it is were you are actually performing the work. Very simple. We DO NOT ADVISE PEOPLE TO FLY UNDER THE RADAR. For those who are paying taxes in their home country you will probably have a tax credit for taxes paid to another country. Will you get caught if you listen to the likes of our resident troll. Maybe, maybe not. However if you get caught you can bet you will lose your Dependents Pass and if you are on a tourist visa you might get away with it for maybe 6 months before you are banned from entering Singapore for a year or more. You partner might not appreciate that too much. A dependents pass is a residency pass and not a social visit pass. It means you are living in Singapore and not transient.

I'd say try to do it the other way. Become none resident in Australia and pay income tax in Singapore. Singapore income tax is much lower. The rules for non residency tax status in Australia are well defined. Look them up.

To have this happen you need to have the Australian company pay you without PAYE deductions into a Singapore bank account (as a non resident employee this is perfectly legal). You cannot reside in Australia more than 45 days within a tax year either.

Generally, working in any country on a tourist visa is illegal. Not sure if in Singapore it is possible, but can consider applying for a digital nomad visa. If you reside more than 183 in Singapore, you have to pay income tax here on any work done. Work performed for a company overseas is a grey area.

Take a look carefully here:

If you do intend to work under the radar, make sure it is under the radar... Posting on social media, attracting attention to yourself could get you in trouble. One example is of a woman working remotely from Bali, Indonesia, and promoting her "cheaper" lifestyle online. She got deported for working on a tourist visa.

Sorry, unable to edit my previous reply. MOM actually lists some conditions on which work pass exemption is possible (up to 90 days):

Hi there! Do you have any links or legislation that states the above please! (45 days or less residing in Australia and being paid in a Singapore bank account)
Thanks so much!

Australian Tax Residency rules are well established. Look at the ATO website.

If you're trying to explain it to an employer it may be easier to tell them you'll send an invoice with no GST for them to pay on from Singapore monthly. That's usually how I do it.
