Why are food operators increasing food prices so drastically?

Post by abbby » Thu, 09 Feb 2023 10:59 am

I realised with the GST increase in January, many food operators, food courts took the chance to increase their food prices from anything like 10% to 50%. I mean GST increase is 1% but their food prices increment doesn't justify the discrepancy. I visited food courts and one stall was selling economical rice for $10 and the squid was $5.50 with 3 tiny squids in it. Very painful.

Another point you have to consider (and let me say I agree they are just profiteering to a large degree now) is the increasing costs of raw ingredients, e.g. fuel costs (both in the production of and the shipment of raw goods. (even things like grain have enormous fuel costs for farm equipment just to get it into the fields and harvesting of same). Trucking, shipping all fuel costs are killing the small farmers & seafood producers. Add to that, processed foods having increasing fuel costs as well (power generation costs). And we haven't even talked about wages which have to go up to allow people to complete the vicious circle. "Tail wagging the dog". I actually give the small businesses props for keeping meal costs reasonable for such a long time, as it were. I've been here as a paying adult for over 40 years and have always had to pay 'angmoh' tax when it came to hawkers centres, etc.

Fish is super expensive. Otherwise from my neighbourhood coffeeshop can still get economy rice for 2 people (1 meat 2 veg) for about $7.
