PR Chance for Vietnamese PhD holder

Post by bdqnghi » Fri, 30 Dec 2022 2:01 am

I am a Vietnamese with a PhD in Computing, specialized in Artificial Intelligence from SMU (2016-2020). After that, I returned to Vietnam for a year before returning to Singapore in January 2022 to work as a Research Scientist at a company with a monthly salary of $16000. I also intend to bring my wife and one-year-old child to Singapore as dependents.
With this background, what are my chances of obtaining PR approval in Singapore? I understand that getting PR is more difficult because of my ethnicity, but I believe there is a small chance with my background; I'm just not sure what else can be improved to enhance my profile further for a better chance. Thanks.

Hi, I have a Vietnamese friend who is also a AI PhD from SMU. He managed to obtain A-star research scholarship and was given a fast track to PR and citizenship (compulsory, you cannot stop at PR). His wife was also granted PR together with him. You can try to find more information on that scholarship, since I'm not very familiar haha.

Another Vietnamese friend who have PhD in Pharmacy from NUS also got her PR recently.

Hope the above information give you some encouragement. Frankly, I cannot say how much chance you have, because there are so many factors and luck involved. But with your background and qualifications, even if you don't get PR immediately, you can still at least have a good life here.

Good luck , my fellow countryman :).

Currently NIL chance due to ethnic quota & too short stay in SG.

Apply together with your wife & child after you renew EP or 2-3 years of continuously working in SG.

If you leave SG for a while and then come back, the time you spend in SG will be reset.

Wait until you renew your EP the first time (24 month probably) apply immediately after the EP is renewed. Very good possibility then. Now, probably just an exercise in frustration on your side. While ethnicity isn't on your side, a PhD from SMU and your industry (AI) should hold you in good stead unless the whole IT industry collapses due to their own greed.
