The motorbike scene is terrible

Post by PNGMK » Wed, 02 Nov 2022 1:43 pm

So my little Grom is running out of COE (great city bike) and I figured I'd look for a larger bike to replace it with. Something that could do the Thailand rides I want to do.

What I've discovered.

A dearth of new models being imported into Singapore has occurred. None of the models that really interest me. For example with Honda you have the Africa Twin, XC750, CBR1000 and that's it. Nothing like the CB500X (a really good midweight allrounder). For Suzuki there seems to be no offical importer now and no new VStroms can be found. For Yamaha not quite so bad but really only the FJR1300 and Tracer and MT09. The Kwaka importer is hopeless as well. There are some china bikes on the market and well prices but they are china bikes and are a generation behind and well maybe issues (CFMOTO for example).

The second hand scene is also really bad. The only place people really sell bikes now is Carousell and maybe SGBIKEMART but very few are added on either and the prices are nuts because COE and import taxes have gone up. I'll have to bite the bullet I guess but just a warning, it's really bad.

Is it possible to work with a parallel importer?

Homologation costs are too high. You need to bring in 10 bikes apparently to make it worthwhile.

I've just bought a 4 year old Versys 650 for 16k. Kwaka make good bikes but their agent here is crap hence they sell cheaper than the hondayamaha stuff.

FJR1300 is my dream bike, but there is no way I could justify to myself paying what requires for it. It is also hardly practical/reasonable just to use it in Singapore.

When my old Piaggio X9 reached its EOL stage I eventually decided to get NC750x and I don't regret it after 3 years. Nothing fancy, nothing sporty, but a solid, every day commuter that I needed and it does the job perfectly.
Versys 650 (16k/4y sounds just right) was a 2nd candidate but if I remember correctly I also had some problems with the dealer. And what I liked about NC750X is the storage space to have it in the place of fuel tank (pretending to be it). Full face helmet fits there. Another interesting thing about the NC is its low RPM engine that is said to be a car engine adapted (half of it TBP). NC stands for New Concept

x9200- an NC750X was second on my list. A lot of them for sale actually and the prices are ok. You can get some with 8+ years COE for 19k.

i’ve been toying with importing 3 classic bikes that are >30yo.

with 120 combined days a year (excluding the 7-10 PH), it would satisfy my motorcycling needs.

anything from 1992 and earlier, plenty of options from japan and they will be easily services in sg.

thinking of a high revving 4 cylinder 1000cc sport bike, a 125cc cub/scoopy gyro runaround, and possibly a 250-500cc street bike that i’ll attach a side car to.

my creamy white thighs shudder thinking about the heat rash i’ll get from the liter bike in sg heat.

a lot of the baby stuff we want (from target or walmart) we can’t get or it’s at a high cost.

i need a super center in frunna our home…! as of 2022 (!) we are leaning towards a move by june.

hence nothing imported rn. : (
