Dr. Chee Soon Juan
This may not be of great interest on an expat forum, especially since he'd probably send most of us home if he got in power. But what an inspiring, compassionate and positive person he is. I have no doubt that Singapore would be a much better place under his leadership. Here's a speech by him, there are many more worth watching or reading.

Having grown up under a flip flopping 2 party (occasionally 3) political system, I'd have to say nope. That may well have proved fatal in Singapore's case, nor do I think it would work well now.

Great speech. His criticisms are fair. I only wish he could have expounded more on solutions instead of just problems. Political opponents are always good at articulating what is wrong with the establishment, but often come up short on providing a compelling alternatives.tiktok wrote: ↑Thu, 29 Sep 2022 1:37 pmThis may not be of great interest on an expat forum, especially since he'd probably send most of us home if he got in power. Another one worth watching: https://youtu.be/R_-w763SHyI
And reading: https://yoursdp.org/publ/sdp_39_s_alter ... -1-0-1388/
He presents plenty of policy ideas in other material. Personally I find his insights into Singapore society, economy and the PAPs shortcomings absolutely fascinating. And the way the PAP has tried to silence him says it all.

Great speech, and no doubt I have thought about how different singapore would be if we were under different leadership, and while that may become a serious possibility as the younger generation slowly becomes of voting age, I do think about what might happen if there was a change in government. I believe it would be a time of instability for singapore, and for foreign countries that have grown comfortable with singapore’s steadfast leadership. It may not be as smooth as one might be inclined to think.tiktok wrote: ↑Thu, 29 Sep 2022 1:37 pmThis may not be of great interest on an expat forum, especially since he'd probably send most of us home if he got in power. True, although I do think that as far as political strategy goes, it would be more impactful to point out the inadequacies of your opponents, rather than to provide them with a solution, which they could very well implement and take credit for.malcontent wrote: ↑Thu, 29 Sep 2022 5:32 pmGreat speech. Slightly off-topic, but he runs a restaurant in Rochester mall, called orange and teal café, I’ve been there and met him personally, lovely guy, very warm and kind. Didn’t speak about politics though (I’m sure he must have enough of those conversations).tiktok wrote: ↑Thu, 29 Sep 2022 8:32 pmAnother one worth watching: https://youtu.be/R_-w763SHyI

Yes, he has mentioned that while the PAP criticizes every idea the SDP has, they end up stealing a lot of them.Lisafuller wrote: ↑Thu, 29 Sep 2022 10:22 pmTrue, although I do think that as far as political strategy goes, it would be more impactful to point out the inadequacies of your opponents, rather than to provide them with a solution, which they could very well implement and take credit for.

I think the most important thing for Singapore’s future is to embrace more racial diversity. Adhering to strict CMIO ratios means you inevitably have to compromise on quality to get the racial mix you desire.

I'd go a step further and say what is really needed is freedom of thought and ideas, and real democracy.

Re: Dr. Chee Soon Juan
The number 1 qualification you need to have to be a politician is to be a great orator. We humans as a species give lots of value and importance to people who can speak well. But there are lots of people who are silent but great thinkers and doers. But they are never going to be politicians. So if someone gives a great speech, all I will say is they are great speakers/actors. But until they do something, I dont believe them.
